Tarkenton rips Favre

fran-tarkentonfavre-cryingLast week 69 year old Hall of Fame QB Fran Tarkenton did a rare interview with an Atlanta radio station. Tarkenton, who played in and lost 3 Super Bowls with the Minnesota Vikings, was asked what he thought about Brett Favre possibly becoming a Viking. He said he’d like to see Favre unretire (again) and join the Vikings. One might logically conclude that Tarkenton would like to see Favre lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl and help them achieve the dream he never reached. However, Tarkenton’s reasoning was much different he said, “I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail”.

Fran why don’t you tell us what you really think; “I think it’s despicable. What he put the Packers through last year was not good,” Tarkenton told 790 The Zone radio. “Here’s an organization that was loyal to him for [16 years], provided stability, provided players.” It just wasn’t about Brett Favre. In this day and time, we have glorified the Brett Favres of the world so much; they think it’s about them.” Fran wasn’t done yet he went on to say Favre has “made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen.”

Tarkenton is also unimpressed by the special treatment Favre received last year from the Jets, the same treatment he hopes to receive this year from the Vikings. We are talking Barry Bonds/Roger Clemens type stuff. Not steroids but “star treatment”, Favre doesn’t want to participate in off-season programs. He also demands to have his own private area in the locker room. To that Tarkenton said, “Playing quarterback is about the relationships you have with your coaches, with your players, with yourtrainers, with your managers, “How can you do that if you show up on game day and you haven’t put the time in?  “And now he’s trying to do it again in Minnesota.

And if Minnesota bites, God bless them. . . . He’s been a great player, there’s no question about it, but it’s all about him. It is supposed to be all about your team. “If you’re going to be the quarterback of your team, you need to be there in the off-season workouts in March and April. Peyton Manning’s there. Tom Brady’s there.”

If Favre does become a Viking there is going to be some tension between these two legendary gun slinging quarterbacks. No worries Minnesota I already have an idea of how they can resolve their differences. We can have them go head to head in a game of touch football on another one of those cheesy Wrangler commercials.

I think anyone other than Favre need to stay out of his business. I am not a huge Brett fan, but if I had a chance to do something I love then I would want to have that option regardless of anyones point of view. I hope he breaks all of Marino’s records.

Two comments: One, who cares what Fran Tarkenton thinks about Brett Favre. He’s a mere shadow in comparison to Favre as a QB, Hall of Fame or not. And two, I like Brett Favre but ain’t no way he’s going to the Super Bowl with Minnesota.

Very true, Ken. Brett just doesn’t know when to say when. I don’t blame him, though. This wouldn’t even be news if his name was Charlie Frye or Mark Brunell.

Chris Collingsworth said it best. Favre can not accept the fact his normal life can never match the life of an NFL star. He needs that life like a plant needs water. A shame but in some strange way, understandable.

I don’t even think it’s about the Packers. I think it’s about Favre. He’s an egomaniac all the way and just can’t stand the thought of not being in the spotlight.

I know a lot of people are down on Tarkenton for his statements on this, but I say good for him to have the guts to stand up and say what he truly feels. You know there has to be a lot of former Vikings and Packers that feel the same way about the whole Favre saga.
For a guy with the credentials he has, to act like a spoiled petulant child is ridiculous. This isn’t about Favre wanting to play anymore, I didn’t buy it last year and I’m not buying it now. This is wanting to stick it to the Packers because they accepted his retirement and moved on. Does that sound wrong to anyone else?
The Packers and the fans were great to him and for him, its a shame he couldn’t return the favor…. just a little bit.

Favre is dead to me if he becomes a Viking. Last year was bad enough but this would be it. He’s gone from my favorite athlete of all-time to an absolute embarrassment to me as a Packer fan.
