Michigan Basketball Season Preview, Part 3

For those who followed my coverage last year you know I chronicled “The Road to 21 Wins” all season. In the preseason I had predicted Michigan would win 21 games and as the season went on I tracked how Michigan was doing on The Road to 21 Wins. So let’s take a look at the 2009-10 schedule and I will tell you how many wins Michigan is on the road to.

Wins (21)

Northern Michigan
Houston Baptist
Creighton
Marquette/Xavier
Boston College
Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Detroit
Coppin State
Ohio State
at Penn State
Northwestern
Indiana
Connecticut
Michigan State
Iowa
Wisconsin
at Iowa
Penn State
Minnesota
Big Ten Tournament: 2

Swing games (10)

at Utah
at Kansas
at Indiana
at Wisconsin
at Purdue
at Northwestern
at Minnesota
Illinois
at Ohio State
at Michigan State

I think Michigan will win either at Utah or at Kansas. I also think they get 12 Big Ten wins this year, which means they will have to win 2 of the 8 Big Ten games in the swing column. So I am projecting Michigan wins at least 3 of the 10 swing games. Sure they might drop a game or two in the win column but they also might win more than 3 of the swing games. So, this year Michigan is on the Road to 24 wins. Remember this includes all games prior to the NCAA Tournament.
The reasons I believe this are as follows:

The first and foremost reason is John Beilein. He is an outstanding coach and he has done a great job of building a foundation at Michigan. Again, if you have followed my coverage you know I think very highly of Beilein.
Secondly, Manny Harris is a tremendous player and he is primed to have a huge season. He is now in his third season under the tutelage of Beilein and his game has really evolved during that time.
Finally, this is the deepest and most versatile Michigan team that we have seen in a long time. Stick with isportsweb all season and let me know what you think about the 24 wins projection.
