Redskins @ Cowboys – Preview
Background
The Washington Redskins (3-6) visit Jerry’s Billion Dollar Stadium to face the hated Dallas Cowboys (6-3). The Redskins have just gotten back on the winning track by defeating the Broncos 27-17. The Cowboys are leading the NFC East division and are coming off a road lost to the Green Bay Packers 17-7. The Redskins are 0-2 in the NFC East and are 0-4 on the road this season. The Cowboys are 3-1 at home and 1-1 in the NFC East.
History
The Redskins and Cowboys arguably have the best rivalry in football. This will be the 99th time they play each other. The Cowboys lead the all-time series 57-39-2. The teams have played each other twice for the right to go to the Super Bowl. The Redskins won both of those match-ups. The Redskins are 13-32-2 in Dallas. The Redskins won the last game these teams played at Texas Stadium last season 26-24. The Cowboys won the last game at Fed Ex Field 14-10. The Redskins have won 5 of the last 8 and are the last team to sweep the season series in 2005. For Redskins Fans the week leading up to a game with the Cowboys is known as “Dallas Week”.
On Offense
The Redskins offense finally put together a decent game. They did so with unlikely heroes in Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright and a patchwork offensive line. Punter Hunter Smith also contributed a fake punt for a touchdown. The Redskins scored more than 17 points for the first time this season. They did not turn the ball over against the Broncos. They played with intensity and they executed plays. If they can do more of the same as well as get the ball to Santana Moss, they have a good chance of beating the hated Cowboys.
On Defense
The defense is 5th overall in the NFL and 1st against the pass. They had a shaky start last week against the Broncos. They gave up two long touchdowns before buckling down and holding the Broncos scoreless in the second half of the game. The Redskins need to knock “Boy Wonder” Tony Romo around, pressure him and contain Marion Barber and Miles Austin and force and capitalize on turnovers.
Summary
This will be a tall order for the Redskins to defeat the Cowboys especially in Dallas. But the Redskins and their fans are riding high after they got back on the winning track. A win against the Cowboys in Dallas (like last year) will go a long way for a struggling team’s confidence. Here is to a win and two in a row!
HAIL REDSKINS!!!
