Rams make it 4 in a row
URI closed out another 2-0 week with a 93-85 win over Umass at the Ryan Center saturday afternoon after defeating lasalle 90-83 tuesday night in Philadelphia. In both games Rhody regained their form from three point range going 11-24 on tuesday and 8-20 saturday against the Minutemen. They also found their touch from the foul line going a combined 38-47 at the line in the two games. This is great news for a URI team that has struggled in both facets in their three losses this season. Both victories saw balanced scoring from the Rams with 6 players in double figures on tuesday night and 5 on saturday. Will Martel was the leading scorer against Lasalle with 16 and Akeem Richmond led the Rams against Umass with 19 included 6 of 10 shooting from behind the arc. Once again Rhody used it’s full court pressure as a catalyst for their offense forcing a total of 40 tunovers in the two games.
Up next for URI is arguarbly their most important game of the season thus far as Richmond will come to The Ryan Center on wednesday night. Richmond is tied with URI for third place in the Atlantic 10 at 7-2 and they are coming off a double digit win against #17 Temple. After the Richmond game it doesn’t get any easier for the Rams as they will travel back to Philadelphia for the third time this season to take on Temple on saturday.
At 19-3 and 7-2 in conference URI would be an NCAA Tournament team if the season ended today along with maybe four or five other Atlantic 10 teams. However the season is far from over and how URI performs this week will go a long way to determing if they will make the tourney for the first time in 11 years. Needless to say a split of these two games is a must.
