BREAKING: Spartans to play UNC on an aircraft carrier

Coach Tom Izzo, at an event at the Motor City Casino on Monday, November 1, 2010 in Detroit, confirmed that the Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball team is “getting close” to announcing a game with North Carolina, to be played on an aircraft carrier.

UPDATE: This is a quote from Tom Izzo’s talk today, speaking about MSU AD Mark Hollis:

…Hollis, he’s the one that played the game in Ford Field against Kentucky… that game led to all the Final Fours now are played in front of 78,000 people… we had a hockey game about 8 years ago in Spartan Stadium… every year now an NHL team plays outside. The guy is incredible. You know what he’s been working on for 2 years? He wants us to play Carolina on an aircraft carrier… I went over and… Hoops with the Troops… Kuwait twice and spent time with our troops a week each year and he got this idea and I mean its – I don’t want to announce it ’cause you guys will be twittering and texting – it is getting close.

More details to follow.

I found this video from September of 2009, where Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis discussed his desire to have the basketball game on the aircraft carrier.  This isn’t a new rumor, but the recency of Coach Izzo’s discussion of the event might give a little credence to the event being announced sometime soon.
