Penn State Football 2011 Season Preview

Silas Redd

Offensive Breakdown

8 starters back on offense…including brash QB Matt McGloin…plus a veteran O line…but the secret to the Nittany Lions success will be the running game…and it is time for Silas Redd to live up to the hype…he has been highly touted since his arrival on campus two years ago…he will get close to 1,000 yds this fall….when McGloin passes he has one of the best WR’s in the conference to throw to in Derek Moye…he can absolutely fly and he’s 6-5…I won’t say he’s Calvin Johnson…but he’s the closest thing to him in a long time…keep your eyes on JoPa this fall…

Defensive Breakdown

8 starters back on the 2nd ranked defense vs the pass and 7th against the run in the Big ten last year and 4th overall…3 seniors and a junior come back on the line…one senior and two juniors in the LB corp and 4 seniors in the secondary…if you’re not counting….eight seniors and three juniors starting on defense…they are going to be good…and DE Jack Crawford will be the leader…I will be shocked if this isn’t the #1 or #2 D in the conference at the end of the year…JoPa can’t wait to get these guys on the field and make a run for the 1st ever Big Ten championship…

Game by Game predictions

Indiana State: W   The Sycamores get cut down..JoPa wins his 9th straight season opener…
Alabama: L   I am going to predict a very low scoring game here..probably rain too…
@ Temple: W   No Al Golden, thankfully for PSU fans…but the Lions will put on a show..
Eastern Michigan: W   The QB situation will be solved by this game as Bolden will take over
@ Indiana: W   Bolden and the Lions cruise past Kevin Wilson and the Hoosiers…
Iowa: W   JoPa finally beats Iowa and gets ready for another up-and-comer in 2011 Purdue
Purdue: W   The Boilers aren’t able to handle the pressure at Beaver Stadium…
@ Northwestern: L   The only road loss of the 2011 season for Penn State..Fitzy gets ‘em…
Illinois: W   Zook’s boys hang tough, but in the end it’s the running of Redd that wins it..
Nebraska: L   two of the most basic uniforms…except that flashy “N” on the Husker helmet..
@ Ohio State: W   OSU will be in shambles at this point and JoPa will jump all over them..
@ Wisconsin: W   Will probably be for the Leaders division crown..PSU does the unthinkable

The Buzz in Happy Valley

Improvement…if all the starters improve, this team should make a run at the Leaders crown…but in Happy Valley it all begins and ends with QB-1…and as it sits right now, it’s McGlioin all he did was throw for 14 TD’s in 9 games…Bolden is probably the long term answer and by seasons end he may  be the starter…but On Sept 3rd it’s McGloin…competition is good right?…so leave it to JoPa…I think he has one last great season up his sleeve…

9 things about the 2011 Nittany Lions

Key to season:   most starters have to improve & Silas Redd has to be a stud…
Watch out for:   QB Bolden to be the starter as October draws closer…
Should start:   3-1…If they beat the Tide (won’t happen) it could be a banner year…
Super stat:   PSU was 101st in NCAA in sacks in 2010
Offensive sleeper:    Technically?…Robert Bolden (non-starter)..
Defensive sleeper:   LB Michael Mauti…67T’s in 2010 as a non-starter…
Overrated:   Matt McGloin….look who he softened his stats against…UM & Indiana
Underrated:   Robert Bolden..had rough numbers, but look who he played…Ala, Iowa
Defining moment:   If PSU can get over the Iowa hump..should be smooth sailing to Nov

The Last 5

Record the last 5 seasons:    47-18
Big Ten record in last 5 years:   26-14
Record in their last 5 bowl games:   3-2
PSU’s last 5 game win streak:   2009
Record in last 5 home games:   3-2

Joe Paterno

401-135 in 45 years
All-time  winningest coach in D-1 football

A Nittany Lion fan says

“The Lions return six starters to the defense and can be expected to show up on that side of the ball..four of the vets are DB’s and that bodes well in what’s fast becoming a four or five WR’s ballgame these days…Offensively?…not so good….I mean, who’s the QB?”
