Michigan Football Game Log – SDSU

Find out what they said after the game: Postgame Reaction

This is a game log from Michigan’s 28-7 win over San Diego State.

10:30 – Some 90 minutes before kickoff and Denard Robinson is out on the field throwing the football.

11:26 – Both teams are on the field warming up. Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train is pumping through the speakers and Brady Hoke, sporting his customary black action slacks, looks like he is going off the rails. It’s obvious today’s match up is a bit uncomfortable for him.

11:41 – Starting line ups announced. Michigan’s offense and SDSU’s defense. The loudest cheer was, of course, for Denard Robinson.

11:55 – Michigan charges out of the tunnel and under the Go Blue banner.

12:01 – Coin toss – SDSU wins and elects to receive.

12:05 – SDSU’s first possession on third and 1 Craig Roh comes up with a big TFL to force a 3 and out.

12:08 – On Michigan’s first possession, on 3rd and 5 Robinson blasts up the middle for a 19 yard gain.

12:09 – Vincent Smith appeared to be stacked up for a short gain when he all of a sudden emerges from a gaggle of players and breaks into the open field. He ended up with a 32 yard run to the SDSU 5 yard line. On the next play, Michigan’s O-line got great push and Denard rode behind them for a TD.

12:14 – Matt Wile with a great kickoff forcing a touchback. His kickoff to open the game was also a good one.

12:20 – Michigan’s opportunistic defense forces Ronnie Hillman to fumble. Thomas Gordon on the recovery, it’s his third takeaway in the last two weeks.

12:24 – Denard Robinson explodes through the line of scrimmage for a 62 yard touchdown. He was not touched by an Aztecs defender on the play. That gives him 4 carries for 80 yards and 2 TDs. With that yardage, Robinson moves past Todd Collins and Jim Harbaugh into 6th place on Michigan’s all-time total offense list.

12:32 – On 3rd and 5 from the Michigan 30 yard line, Ryan Van Bergen knocked down Ryan Lindley’s pass. SDSU elected to go for it on 4th and 5 and Lindley threw an incomplete pass. Turnover on downs.

12:37 – With Michigan driving, Vincent Smith fumbled and the ball is recovered by SDSU on their own 27 yard line. The U-M defense followed that up with a 3 and out, forcing an SDSU punt.

12:42 – End of the first quarter with Michigan leading 14-0. Heading into today’s game, Michigan had been outscored 21-0 in the opening stanza.

12:46 – Kevin Koger drops a pass that was right in his breadbasket. Had he hung onto the ball it would have been a big gain.

12:48 – Mike Martin absolutely blew up the SDSU center and forced Lindley into an incomplete pass.

12:50 – The scoreboard cam shows a shot of Greg Mattison. It brings me great comfort to see him on Michigan’s sideline.

1:03 – Ricky Barnum is injured and replaced by Michael Schofield.

1:06 – Michigan ran an option play – Robinson pitched to Fitz Toussaint who picked up a 1st down.

1:10 – On 4th down and 2 from midfield, with 2:30 left in the first half, Michigan goes for it. Robinson picked up the 1st down. Gutsy call by Brady Hoke. Had they not converted, SDSU would have had a very short field to work with.

1:11 – On the next play Robinson burst into the open field and picked up 34 yards.

1:14 – Robinson knifed into the end zone for his 3rd TD of the game. He finished the 1st half with 11 carries for 139 yards and 3 TDs.

Halftime – Michigan 21-0 – not too shabby a first half for the Wolverines, against a team that many predicted would beat them.

2:24 – Robinson overthrows Roundtree on what would have been an 82 yard TD pass.

2:25 – Michigan goes 3 and out and momentum begins to swing to the Aztecs.

2:28 – JT Floyd just missed on a pick-six. Good coverage anyhow and a PBU.

2:34 – Robinson overthrew Roundtree on 3rd down.

2:35 – Matt Wile smacked a 45 yard punt and Terrence Robinson made a great tackle on the coverage for no gain.

2:43 – Robinson raced for a 34 yard gain on the first play after the Aztecs turned it over on downs

We are becoming one dimensional again. This is not going to work against better teams.
