The following is one of many Sooner player previews to come. Over the course of the next week leading up to the season, Chandler Vessels will be previewing the Oklahoma Sooners roster, schedule and overall outlook for the 2011-2012 season! Stay tuned for more on the Sooner hoops season preview!
When Romero Osby joined the team last season he was immediately hyped as the best player on the Sooners roster. It seemed no matter who you talked to, Osby was the real deal. Unfortunately, since he transferred over from Mississippi State, he was ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules. Now, after sitting out a season however, Osby is ready to suit up and become a reputable force in the Sooner lineup.
In two exhibition games so far Osby has already proved to be an upgrade over the rebounding displayed last season, averaging 6 boards per contest. He has also been serviceable in the scoring department with 11.5 points over the two games. If this is any indication of his performance during the regular season, the Big 12 has best be put on notice.
Though, keeping in mind these were his first competitive games in over a year, expect his performance to progress as the season does.
He will certainly be of aid to a post that, last season, was last in the Big 12 in rebounds per game with just 30.3. His athleticism and flexible style of play should allow him to be a force defensively in the post as well.
All in all, the addition of Osby is arguably one of the most important this season for the Sooners. He gives them an extra post presence to go along with Andrew Fitzgerald, but he could probably also play on the wing if needed. If he is able to perform up to the hype from last season, the Sooners could end up being surprisingly better than expected.
Projected Stats: 13 PPG, 7 RPG, 1 BPG, 1 SPG
