The following is one of many Sooner player previews to come. Over the course of the next week leading up to the season, Chandler Vessels will be previewing the Oklahoma Sooners roster, schedule and overall outlook for the 2011-2012 season! Stay tuned for more on the Sooner hoops season preview!
The first player to sign in the Kruger era, Sam Grooms looks to be a critical part of the Sooner hoops team this season, taking on the role of point guard. Last season, the point guard position was hazy heading into the year, and the Sooners switched around quite a few times before settling on Carl Blair Jr. Grooms, ranked 3rd overall by jucorecruiting.com and 11th by jucojunction.com, looks to add depth at the PG position. Though it is unclear who will get the starting spot still, it appears Grooms and Blair will share equal playing time this season running the show on offense.
From the first two exhibition games, one could gather this on Grooms: he is a quick, athletic, strong, guard that will definitely push the pace and fit right into Kruger’s up-tempo system. He was able to get out on fast breaks and run the offense well, and with the aid of Blair, they could be deadly in the backcourt. He also possesses a sweet stroke from beyond the arc.
No doubt, the Sooners could use a force like Grooms this season. The depth and skills that he adds should be of great value to a team lacking in that area last season. Expect Grooms to be a pivotal force right out of the gate, and as the season progresses, and the team meshes, anticipate nothing but improvement on his part.
Projected Stats: 7 PPG, 4 APG, 1 SPG
