Everybody likes to say that defense wins championships. The Green Bay Packers are trying to prove that theory wrong this season.
The Green Bay Packers continue to give up large chunks of yards to opponents, most notably through the air but yet they continue to find a way to win.
The Packers currently rank second last in the league in passing yards given up per game at just under 300 yards a game. So far it hasn’t hurt the Packers but I can’t help but shake the feeling that it will cost the Packers a game.
When you look at the schedule the Packers have left for the rest of the season they don’t really face an “elite” quarterback with the only exception being Eli Manning, if you rank him as “elite” that is, when the Packers go on the road to New York on December 4th.
While the Packers won’t have to worry about an “elite” quarterback shredding the Packers defense for the rest of the season it’s the playoffs that really worry me.
We saw guys like Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers put up massive amounts of yards against the Packers and even quarterbacks like Jay Cutler put up big yards against the Packers. When you reach the playoffs these are the types of quarterbacks you are going to see and if the Packers still can’t even slow these guys down they could be in trouble.
The defense can’t possibly seem to hold up this level of “bend but don’t break” level of play for the rest of the season and especially in the playoffs.
Or can they?
If the Packers haven’t lost a game due to their poor secondary so far maybe they can continue it the rest of the season all the way to a championship.
The defense has made the plays it needs to win these games. Making key stops, coming up with turnovers and really clamping down on opponents offense when they truly have to.
At times its painful to watch as week after week teams can seemingly throw the ball at will but then the defense steps up and gets that interception that they need or make the key third down stop.
It would be nice to see the defense as a whole really shut down an opponent but the team is undefeated so there is nothing to complain about. It is still an aspect to worry about as the season progresses but so far so good.
