North Carolina Football: Larry Fedora in?

From the UNC’s web site Inside Carolina it seems that the hiring of Larry Fedora, who interviewed for the Carolina job as well as the Texas A&M one on Monday, is basically a done deal, with the official announcement coming on Thursday. The 49 year old Fedora, who had a 33-19 record in his four years at Southern Miss, seems to have impressed Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham enough that the school offered him the job the following day. From what I have read of the coach he does have a good track record, and has had high octane offenses while at Southern Miss, with seasons of 5,636 yards in 2008 and 6.123 yards in 2011.

With the Tar Heels returning quarterback Bryn Renner, tail back Giovani Bernand and four fifth of the offensive line, you have to believe that someone like Fedora could bring the same type of offensive numbers to Chapel Hill from the get go. And if the coach wants to keep his streak of not have a losing season as the head man of a program he will need to muster up that type of offense as the D won’t be as talented next season for the Heels. This will also show how good Fedora can be at bringing in the right coaches for the right jobs. But, maybe more important for the program, a good season might just be the only thing that will get the fan base and the rest of college football turning the page from the off the field fiascos that have hit the team and some of its coaches. On the other hand, to be fair in reporting, from the Tar Heel Fan blog, it seems that Fedora also has had a run in with the NCAA concerning violations. From the story found on this it said that they were secondary violations, meaning they aren’t considered major infractions.

Besides having been the head coach at Southern Miss Fedora has been the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, and has coached at Baylor and Florida, holding different positions. At OSU he led again a high powered offense while the other two jobs make him valueable for the fact of where the schools are located, Texas and Florida, a place that any college wants to be able to recruit from. In the end, is this the man to move the program forward? Only time will tell. But from the looks of it he will be the one that the school is going to give the chance to, and it’s the hope of this blogger than the fans back him and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the quest.
