North Carolina Football: The ACC comes out with the 2012 schedule

The Atlantic Coast Conference has come out with next season’s football schedule and for North Carolina there is plenty to talk about. The first thing that caught my eye for head coach Larry Fedora’s team is that they will be facing Maryland to end the season, a spot usually saved for Duke or Virginia. But the more interesting thing about next year’s schedule is that UNC will play five in state opponents: Elon (home) on 9/1, Wake Forest (road) 9/8, East Carolina (home) on 9/22, Duke (road) on 10/27 and N.C. State (home) on 10/27. From a tweet by North Carolina Football it said that doing this has not happened since the 1940’s. Finally, the last thing to point out in this post is that the team will be playing a Thursday night game against Virginia in their second to last game of the season.

Here is the full season for the Tar Heels…

Sept. 1 ELON
Sept. 8 at Wake Forest
Sept. 15 at Louisville
Sept. 22 EAST CAROLINA
Sept. 29 IDAHO
Oct. 6 VIRGINIA TECH
Oct. 13 at Miami
Oct. 20 at Duke
Oct. 27 NC STATE
Nov. 3 OPEN
Nov. 10 GEORGIA TECH
Nov. 15 at Virginia (Thursday), ESPN
Nov. 24 MARYLAND

This is a schedule that can have UNC undefeated, at 5 and 0, going into the home game against Virginia Tech. From there if the Tar Heels can keep it going they might just have as good as a season in 2012 as they have had in the Butch Davis era. The first year for the new coaching staff should be one that could be truly interesting, and in the end this program might be under the NCAA penalties, but is still moving forward and looking up for both the near and far future.
