The Weekend: Detroit City FC and BBVA Compass Stadium

As summer enters upon the soccer world, this May weekend will be host to bright beginnings and possible glorious finishes for soccer teams from around the world.

BBVA Compass Stadium- The MLS will add another soccer specific stadium to the league as the Houston Dynamo present the new BBVA Compass Stadium Saturday versus DC United. The 95 million dollar project took only 16 months to complete and will be able to host concerts, college football, and international/professional soccer matches. Situated in the heart Houston’s downtown stadium district, BBVA Compass Stadium is one of most prominent MLS stadiums in a downtown area, symbolizing the MLS impact in the Houston community. The Dynamo’s inaugural match will be against Eastern Conference rival DC United at 4:30 PM ET on the NBC Sports Network. The opening of the stadium is a remarkable feat for the club, and is sure to be a flagship spectacle to promote the rise in soccer in the US.

Manchester City’s Final Fight- In a berserk English Premier League season that has seen it’s highs and lows, it will end where it began—in the hands of Manchester City. Predicted to be the strongest side this year, City has proven to battle through all the challenges of a championship club, including defeating their rival Manchester United twice. With an 8 goal differential lead over United, “The Blues” only need one victory to claim the outright title and complete an achievement forty-four years absent for fans. With Queens Park Rangers battling against relegation, expect Sunday’s competition to be as difficult as ever, and adding the fact that the game will be in Manchester, the pressure will be engulfing for City. A Manchester United loss or draw could also give the crown to City, but a trip to Sunderland should be an expected three points for the Red Devils. The finish the English Premier League season rests on the shoulders of Manchester City; nobody to blame but themselves and nobody to cheer but themselves.

Detroit City FC- Soccer enthusiasm has returned to Motown as the new NPSL club Detroit City FC will make their inaugural debut at home this Saturday. Led by a slew of former collegiate players and coached by Kylie Stannard (Michigan State Assistant Coach), Detroit City FC truly embodies a proud and local soccer club. A main proponent of the club’s inception is due to the growing soccer fan support throughout the city that includes the Motor City Supporters (a local soccer group established to bring the popularity of the game to the city and state), and Detroit City FC’s newly established supporters section entitled the “North Guard Supporters”. Momentum for the opening match has increased throughout the weeks as a large and passionate fan group is expected Saturday evening at the newly soccer-renovated Cass Tech Stadium in downtown Detroit. The aptly nicknamed “Le Rouge” is the beginning of a growing movement for Detroit to become a soccer city and possible home of a future MLS club. Saturday will be the start of something special in a generation desiring the beautiful game to thrive in Detroit. Come support the movement Saturday night at 7pm as Detroit City FC hosts AFC Cleveland in the initiation of a soccer revival in Michigan.
