Jonathan Papelbon is perfect in saves for the Philadelphia Phillies. While Rube Amaro looks over the available talent, is there an answer for the bullpen in the system?

The Chrystal Champagne Toast is a salute to John Mayberry Jr.
He had a tater and 3 steaks. He was joined on the top floor by Hunter Pence. Hunter doubled in a 1st-inning run for an early lead. Mayberry stroked a 3-run bomb to retake the advantage in the 3rd.
The Glasshouse had a broken window in the 10th with Joe Savery, who hung a 2-strike, 2-out breaking ball for the loss after a 5-pitch walk and a balk. He has had 3 poor outings in his 7 opportunities since his recall, and Raul Valdes may be replacing him shortly.
In-House News: Chase Utley played 5 complete at second after 4 frames there the day before.
I will publish after every battle that is not washed out. I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.
The Revolving Door:
Cholley Manuel doesn’t trust his relief corps with the exception of Cinco Ocho. He keeps the starter on the mound too long as a result. He has been burned on both sides of that decision. Paps is the best hammer for the red pinstripes in recent memory, which includes Brad Lidge, Billy Wagner, Ryan Madson, Flash Gordon, Brett Myers, Jose Mesa and Ricky Bottalico. The rotation goes 6-8 innings in almost every performance. That leaves the 6 outs in the 7th and 8th.
Antonio Bastardo was hitting 94 on the gun, which means he is close to claiming the set-up for Paps. But he struggles when he comes in with inherited runners. Chad Qualls has 8th-frame stuff but lacks consistency. Jake Diekman is decent as the lefty specialist, which leaves 3 seats in the ‘pen.
The slow-to-heal youngsters include Mike Stutes, David Herndon and Justin De Fratus. Will they make a 2012 contribution? Savery and B.J. Rosenberg are on the bubble from Philly to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Valdes will probably see more time with the parent club unless things improve. So far, the recent success of Michael Schwimer is the top news, and if he keeps showing marked improvement, he might share the 8th with Bastardo. Schwimer has a 1.29 ERA since his recall, and hasn’t allowed a run after slightly changing his arm slot.
He is 2-5 with a 4.59 ERA without the relief efforts. He has lasted 7 innings or more in 2 of 9 attempts with 3 clunkers, including his last 2 appearances.

He was a 15-game winner in 2010 and hasn’t come close to duplicating that campaign. That said, he is making his 2012 debut after injuries have decimated their rotation. He was 3-2 with a 3.22 ERA at Double-A New Hampshire.

My program acronym is Mac for Methodical Algorithmic Computerization. That is the feed system to Fox Sports, which naturally publishes all of their affiliates first. The rest is luck, which means that you know about half of my reviews, including ones that drew positive responses from other outlets. Articles on Fox Sports break down to the ones you know about or are unaware of.

Tal’s Handy Stats is daily coverage. I am alternating the 2012 ERA For The NL East and the 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. Thank you, to all who bookmarked the Phillies page.
