With one swing by Jim Thome, the Philadelphia Phillies leapfrogged out of the cellar into sole possession of 4th place. Can they continue the climb up the standings?

The Chrystal Champagne Toast is a salute to Thoms.
The pinch hitter ended the drama with an opposite-field blast in the 9th. He was joined on the top floor by Juan Pierre, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Valdes and Chad Qualls.
J-Roll went yard and alertly advanced to 2nd on long-shot play at 3rd. Magic Juan hit a 2-out, 3-RBI dinger in the 4th to take a 5-3 advantage. He also made 2 nice defensive plays and swiped 2 bags. Valdes shut down the Rays for 2 innings after the squad went in front. He has passed Joe Savery on the depth chart. Qualls only was touched for a catcher’s interference during his 12th hold.
The Lighthouse warned of right-field winds before Jimmy enjoyed the elements for a paint-scraping homerun inside the foul pole during the 3rd.
Pierre visited Greenhouse Cholley in the 7th with his legs, taking 2nd to create a 2-base error, pilfering 3rd and scoring on a dunker.
The Kangaroo Courthouse placed Michael Martinez on the docket for a poor-judgment flip in the 8th that missed an out at 2nd.
The Whitehouse celebrated the 900th MLB victory for Cholley Manuel, and the MLB-leading 13th walk-off bomb by Thome. It was also number 609 to tie Sammy Sosa for 7th all-time.
The Clearinghouse accepted the $5K check offered by Jonathan Papelbon for a tater in the 9th, which was awarded to Thoms.
In-House Rehab: 2B Chase Utley went 0 for 6 with a HBP, a SB and a sac-fly RBI at Bright House Field during the last 2 contests.
I will publish after every battle that is not washed out. I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.
I didn’t say it was going to be easy or fast in my prediction. This is my 2nd forecast in 3.5 years. The rainout pushed this commentary back a day, which allowed Miami an opportunity to lose. That said, the red pinstripes are only a half game out of the basement. The next 2 steps are to stay ahead of the Marlins and reach .500 or slightly better.
The front four of their 5-man staff have an ERA range from 3.82 to 4.01, and Ricky Nolasco has a 5.16 ERA. Heath Bell has a 5.47 ERA with 14 saves in 18 chances. Jose Reyes is averaging .270 with 16 SB in 20 tries, while Hanley Ramirez sits at .258, 11 dongs and 38 RBI. Both are below expectations. Giancarlo Stanton is having a solid summer with a .277 mark, 16 clouts and 44 RBI. Some of their other regulars are: 2B Omar Infante (.290), LF Logan Morrison (.231, 7 HR & 23 RBI), 1B Gaby Sanchez (.196), C John Buck (.165) and CF Emilio Bonifacio (.268).
The Marlins are in the middle of the majors with their gloves and their rotation. But they are at the bottom in hitting, bullpen and overall pitching. They are on a 2-15 run and went 1-8 earlier in the campaign. They have not jelled as a unit and it might be their contradictory personalities.
He regained his mastery last time out, when he acknowledged last place and did only his role. The Phils need both studs to eat frames, because the ‘pen was used extensively yesterday. The team will need someone for Wednesday night unless one of the aces has a very short outing.

He will bounce back, like Hamels did, to the horse he is in this battle. Plus, a win in his line will have a curing affect on him mentally.

He has worked 6.2 frames or more in 4 of his 6 attempts with 2 clunkers. That said, he is 1-2 with a 4.82 night ERA, which is 1.98 lower during the day. He has only been up for a month and hasn’t been completely exposed to the AL.

My program acronym is Mac for Methodical Algorithmic Computerization. That is the feed system to Fox Sports, which naturally publishes all of their affiliates first. The rest is luck, which means that you know about half of my reviews, including ones that drew positive responses from other outlets. Articles on Fox Sports break down to the ones you know about or are unaware of.
