Michigan Football recruiting update – the remaining targets

Brady Hoke and his staff are off to a scintillating start on the recruiting trail. They have secured verbal commitments from 22 recruits and their 2013 recruiting class is currently ranked #1 nationally by all the recruiting services. Hoke has been able to elevate U-M’s recruiting profile with his genuine personality and by cultivating an authentic family atmosphere within the Michigan Football program. He loves his players and they love him. Standing on the field after Michigan defeated Hoke’s former team, SDSU, last season, I was able to witness this dynamic up close and personal. I watched as countless Aztecs players sought out Coach Hoke and embraced him. The mutual admiration between Hoke and each of his former players was obvious.

At Media Day last year, every time I asked one of the Michigan players about Coach Hoke their faces lit up. He handles the team exactly the way a coach should. When they win he directs all the praise and accolades to the players. When they lose he takes the blame. For some coaches that is just a cliched approach. To Coach Hoke it is real because he is the ultimate example of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). There isn’t anything phony about him and everybody sees it. His players do and so do the high-character prospects that he recruits.

Michigan Football commits have been all over the country starring at various camps this spring and summer. Quarterback Shane Morris has earned an invite to the prestigious Elite 11 QB camp. Morris is also one of 7 future Wolverines to have received an invite to The Opening. He will join future teammates; David Dawson, Jourdan Lewis, Mike McCray II, Taco Charlton, Kyle Bosch, and Jake Butt at Nike World Headquarters for the event.

The Remaining Targets

With 22 recruits already in the fold, it doesn’t leave room for too many more to join the class. Below, I’ve highlighted 6 players that could snag one of the remaining few slots in Michigan’s 2013 class.

Leon McQuay III, Michigan Football

Leon McQuay III

LaQuon Treadwell (Crete, Illinois) – Treadwell is one of the elite WR recruits in the 2013 class. Michigan has been in good position to land him for quite some time now. The unsettling news on this front is that instead of committing, Treadwell is adding new schools to his list. The latest being Auburn.

Leon McQuay III (Seffner, Florida) – McQuay is ranked #34 overall by ESPNU and considered one of the top 3 safety prospects in the country. He has narrowed his decision down to 3 schools; USC, Vanderbilt, and Michigan. With a 4.2 GPA, McQuay means it when he says academics are important to him. He would like to study music in college and all 3 of his final schools have excellent music programs.

Derrick Green (Richmond, Virginia) – Green is ranked #12 overall and rated the #1 running back in the 2013 class by rivals. Michigan made the cut when he trimmed his list of potential schools down to 10. At 6-foot, 215 pounds, Green is the type of power back that Brady Hoke covets. He figures to be a longshot, but once he gets on campus and has the opportunity to sit down with Coach Hoke, you never know. Green is slated to attend the BBQ at the Big House on July 29th.

Jordan Wilkins (Cordova, Tennessee) – Wilkins is a 4-star running back who will visit Michigan on June 26th. Rivals ranks Wilkins as the #11 RB in the 2013 class. He checks in at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds and like Green, is a power runner.

Kendall Fuller (Olney, Maryland) – Fuller is generally considered the top ranked cornerback recruit in the nation. Rivals ranks him as the #3 overall player in the country. He has narrowed his decision down to 3 schools; Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Michigan. The Hokies are probably the favorite here, but Michigan has a shot and Fuller played in high school with Blake Countess.

Joe Mathis (Upland, California) – He is one of the top 10 defensive end recruits in the country. Michigan is recruiting him to play rush end. Back on June 14th, Gary Paskwietz of WeAreSC.com said this about Mathis: Might be the toughest to rope in [for USC]. He seems like a player who is starstruck by Michigan and the lure of leaving the area.
