The fact that Drew Davis, the son of former head coach Butch Davis at UNC, is enrolled at North Carolina and will be playing football, as he was offered a prefered walk on status for head coach Larry Fedora’s squad has been out for about two weeks. I have waited for a while to talk about this cause I wanted to be fully unbias and find something positive about this story. Well, after all that time I can say with confidence that I could not. I guess this whole story, while being about the young man in principle, the reality is that it’s about the father and the college, putting the freshman quarterback in an extremely tough place. And it’s also a story that started before Drew Davis ever entered the North Carolina Football program, as chancellor Holden Thorp committed an NCAA violation by uttering his name in public.
But let’s get back to the young man who might never take a snap for the Tar Heels but might just be the Carolina version of Tim Tebow, a non starter who could get more attention than the player going under center, at least before the season begins. The 6’2″/195 lbs gunslinger had a good senior season at East Chapel Hill HS, where Brynn Renner’s father coached him, going 322 for 519 (62%) for 3,511 yds and 30 TDs. He also rushed for 561 yds and 5 TDs on 161 carries. Many believe, that while the young man also had this type of offer from Miami, where his father coached for over a decade, he chose UNC because of his connection with the starting QB after having been under the tuteledge of his father while in high school.
“He wanted us all to be OK with it,” Butch Davis said in an AP interview.
“We’re parents. As much as anything else, you want what’s best for your child. This is what he wishes to do and we’re going to support him”
Add to all of this the fact that it does not look like his parents were in favor of this, but were in favor of supporting their son (as all parents should do) and that Drew Davis was also involved in the story line of Jennifer Wiley, the tutor in the middle of the academic scandal at the college, and this move by both the young man and the university does not seem like a smart one at all. With the college, the team, the fan base wanting to move on from the scandals that have hovered over Chapel Hill for quite some times this is not the way to do it. Almost a year ago, against the majority of the fans, the school let their head coach go just before the beginning of the pre-season. Now, eleven months later the school is welcoming in his son. Some how that just makes me cringe thinking that it could end up in a very bad way.
how in the world could this end up being bad? he’s just a normal teenage kid who has always had his heart at UNC. he probably knows basically the whole entire team, also heard he had offers from many different D1 schools. he is a great football player and person and will only add more to the UNC football family. his dad being fired has nothing to do with where he wants to attend school..ridiculous
