Can we at least give Colt McCoy a chance to battle Seneca Wallace in training camp for the backup position? Mike Holmgrem has stated that Colt McCoy was never really given a fair chance to be the starting quarterback last year. So in return, they decide to put him on the trading block? You don’t just get rid of a guy who was not given a fair chance, especially when that guy lives in Cleveland. A city that has never really been given a fair chance when it comes to jobs, sports teams’ success, and star players.
Last Year Seneca Wallace came in for an injured Colt McCoy and put up worse numbers than Colt. So why is Seneca Wallace even in the consideration for being the backup quarterback? Oh Ok, I forget he is Mike Holmgrem’s boy. That’s why he was the backup in Seattle and is the backup here on Cleveland.
I’m not big on numbers just facts, so I am going to keep this simple. In Seneca Wallace’s last game of the season he was 16/41 177 yards with a 39% completion rating against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In comparison to a rookie Colt McCoy playing his last game of the season againstPittsburgh, Colt went for 20/41 209 yards 49% completion rating.
While neither one shows a game breaking star, you would think that a seasoned backup like Seneca Wallace would fare a little bit better against one of the best defenses in the NFL, but for Seneca Wallace to do worse only show the value he has to the team; Which is absolutely nothing. Seneca was not overly excited to be Colts backup and expressed it to the media of Cleveland. I don’t care if he threw support around Brandon Weeden; it was still a slight to McCoy. To all the people keeping score at home, that shows he is not a team guy, and not someone that can come in and win games. If we are keeping him because he knows the offense, he does not show it on the field and has never been known as a backup that teaches. Mike Holmgrem has stated that one of the qualities of a good backup QB was his ability to scramble and extend plays. Yes Seneca does run the ball well, but Colt does it better because he actually extends the passing play and uses the run as the last option not the first.
If we really believed in Colt McCoy as the starter than why would we want to get rid of him as a backup? Especially when Mike Holmgrem personally picked Colt McCoy to groom him. Groom the guy then dont force him out. Surely you don’t think that he will have a “Tebow” effect on the city and having people call his name to come in and save the day.
The Washington Redskins drafted their franchise QB in RGIII with the second overall pick, and selected his backup two rounds later in Kirk Cousins. I would bet that they are grooming Cousins to trade for a high first or second round selection. This is what the Packers did with Matt Flynn and he was a seventh round pick.
Don Banks wrote a nice little article about the success that quarterbacks have had after being backup quarterbacks. Check it out.

Hello Cleveland, let’s use this strategy.
Colt McCoy will be 29 in four years. That would be the same age as Brandon Weeden when he makes his sixth NFL start as a rookie. If things don’t work out with Brandon Weeden we can always have Colt McCoy come in and be the starter with over 6 years of NFL experience. Colt McCoy is a winner and needs to be recognized as a quality backup in this league that could turn into a Championship QB.
Let’s not follow the model of just getting rid of players just because, let’s have a solid starter, and a solid backup QB for years to come. Let’s remember Colt McCoy is a team player, a great kid and locker room guy and will only help as well as push Brandon Weeden.
With all due respect to Seneca Wallace, and I’m saying with all due respect the Cleveland Browns is not the team for you.
The biggest joke is that the Cleveland Browns front office knows what’s best. You have never known what is best and that’s why the team always loses. Do yourself a favor Cleveland Browns and keep Colt McCoy as a backup.
McCoy had no weapons, a coahing change and a lockout to deal with. Get him some talent to play with and keep him in the offense for more than a season and he will figure it out and be successful. Holmgren needs to be fired. Weeden won’t be good and I hope McCoy gets a fresh start somewhere else and has another chance to start some day…
Did we see the Packers backup QB last night in Harrell or McCoy? McCoy would be a great fit in GB. http://cheeseheadzone.com/colt-mccoy-green-gold/
The best player to come to Cleveland in years is Colt McCoy. Wake up people!!
if the brownies had any real talent to help Colt, they could compete against anyone. Colt didn’t do it alone on college, he can’t do it alone in the nfl either

I really hope Cleveland gives up on Colt and he goes to a diferent team…

The comment that Colt “could turn into a Championship QB” is a pipedream. He’s a career backup and a possible starter for a handful of teams (JAX, maaybe ARI, etc). I love his attitude and agree that he should be kept over Seneca Wallace as Cleveland’s backup, but any delusion that he’s going to win a Super Bowl as a starting quarterback is borderline ridiculous. He doesn’t have the arm.

The real reason they shouldn’t trade Colt? He costs 1/6 the amount as Wallace. Yeah, that’s right, SW made $3 mil last year, warming the bench alongside the pouting Hillis, who pulled in well over a million while sitting on his (spreading) butt. Colt made $490k – while getting pounded REPEATEDLY due to the non-existent line, and lack of any firepower in backs or receivers. So who would you pick as your backup – your 2012 starter, or his backup, who costs six times as much. Having said that, I hope for nothing more than that they trade Colt. He deserves a chance.
That is a sloid point..and I could have used it in the article
Colt McCoy needs protection from his line. He is a winner and should be Cleveland’s first choice.
The only reason Cleveland didn’t trade Colt McCoy is because no other NFL team would offer anything for him. Colt had two years to try and prove himself, and he failed…nuff said!
He had a chance, Colt McCoy isn’t an NFL caliber quarterback, end of story!
is Seneca Wallace/
is Seneca Wallace/
There is no reason at all the Browns should even consider keeping Seneca Wallace over Colt McCoy. Wallace couldn’t win the job as starter over McCoy why whould he win the back-up role. Beside the Browns are crazy to not Start McCoy he knows the NFL and he knows how to win…
Good read..Also,very very true…
Thanks……Do you know about the Brownsbackers…im sure we have a huge following in AZ…we have one in Dallas…3 diff locations to watch the games
