North Carolina Basketball: Former Heel Jerry Stackhouse Signed By Nets

Today was the day that the National Basketball Association franchises could make their official offers with the players they had been talking to. One of them was former North Carolina Basketball player Jerry Stackhouse. The 17 year veteran, who spent most last year coming off the bench for the Atlanta Hawks while averaging 3.6 points per game, has signed a one year deal worth $ 1.3 million with the new New York based team, the Brooklyn Nets. Without a doubt the Nets want Stackhouse for locker room presence he will give them more than his abilities on the court for the upcoming season, but either way it will be a nice way to finish such a long career in the pro’s.

For the 37 year old, who had his best year about a decade ago when he scored just below 30 points per game (2nd best in the league) and averaged 17.4 ppg for his long established career, staying on the court has been an issue of late. As the 6’6″ shooting guard has not been able to participate in more than 40 games per season in the last 3 years. With the Nets Stackhouse’s services will be more valuable as the one keeping the locker room tight and the moods light than what he can do on the hardwoods. Either way it will still be nice to see the guard be in the league for one more season, whatever the role might be.

With a new building to play in, with a roster that seems to have added some pieces and could give the Knicks a run for their money as best team in the Big Apple, but with Dwight Howard still so up in the air no one can see him, the newly moved club needs players like Stackhouse on its roster. For those of us old enough to remember Jerry Stackhouse was such a presence in the North Carolina Basketball program before he began his NBA career. It is great that he will end his pro career once again as a presence on his team. Like I do with all the present and former Tar Heel let me with Jerry Stackhouse all the best for the upcoming season.

In the days Stackhouse made some of us remember of the greatest one ever…
