2012 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Quickview

2011 Record:  3-9

Head Coach:  Jerry Kill- 2nd year    3-9

Returning Starters:    9    4- Offense   5- Defense

Nonconference Schedule Breakdown:  The poor Gophers begin the season on a Thursday night in Las Vegas against UNLV…tough one.   Whatever…Then Minnesota gets New Hampshire, Western Michigan and Syracuse..be careful of the Broncos of WMU…they are one of the favorites in the MAC in 2012…they could be dangerous…but Jerry Kill should have his boys ready to go by then…and I think he has a grasp of MAC football..so the Broncos will not catch Kill off guard.

Schedule Rank (in the Big Ten) 7th hardest:  nonconference slate aside, there is plenty of room to get the season off to a great start…they get a toughie to open the Big Ten schedule as they hit the road vs rival Iowa…then a bye week and the schedule gets tougher as the season goes on beginning with Northwestern and ending with ELU…but they have a brutal list of teams they have to play away from TCF Bank Field…Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Nebraska…don’t look for any W’s in November either…

Who they don’t play in 2012: Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State

The Skinny:  It will be the MarQueis Gray show in Minneapolis..or I guess I should say MarQueinneapolis…by seasons end, he will be a very good QB and will upset a team that they shouldn’t beat…the Gophers do return a team that had a lot of rough patches in 2011..,but they also got a lot of guys some important playing time…the tragic loss of LB Gary Tinsley has rocked this team and they will have him on their mind all season long…look for inspiration to get this team to a bowl game this fall…they will be improving almost each week.

Toughest Game in 2012:  September 29th @ Iowa…this is not their toughest game…but, if Minnesota is going to finish .500 or better..they need to have at least 4 W’s after this game…or 6 is going to be a tough number to get to…REALLY tough.

Best Player:  MarQueis Gray…this guy is Ricky Foggy…but the bigger, faster, stronger version of him…he has a rocket arm and is a good runner..he needs to stay healthy for his team to go bowling though…Max Shortell is good, but he is no talent like Gray.

What MIGHT happen:  Gophers start 5-0 and finish 8-4 and go to a New Years Day bowl….(like everyone else who finishes with 8 W’s)

What WILL happen:  The Gophers will lose a nonconference game…one they shouldn’t lose…

What WON’T happen:   Minnesota will win 2 of their 4 Big Ten road games….they’d be lucky to win one…

Why they won’t win the Big Ten:  Their schedule is just too tough with not enough Big Ten type players…if they had this schedule 2 years from now…it’s a different story…but not now.

Why they will win the Big Ten: A LOT of other things would have to happen for Minnesota to win the Big Ten…they would have to have 4 or 5 NFL draft picks on their defense…and a proven running game…and a break or two from the Big Ten scheduling czar…A LOT!

Gotta know about the Gophers:  The Gophers are 9-9 in Lincoln against the Cornhuskers…

BOLD Statement:  MarQueis Gray will be voted to All Big Ten Honorable Mention team
