Football season is here!!
Oh wait….it’s just pre-season football. Well it’s better than nothing.
My issue with pre-season games is that the first game is usually pointless as the starters are on the field for such a short amount of time that if you go to the bathroom you may miss them playing entirely. The first pre-season game is usually really sloppy and borderline pointless. Today’s game was no exception.
I am currently writing this as the fourth quarter is being played because I can only take so much of watching guys who will be sitting on the bench playing. This game was ugly from the start as both teams coughed up the ball numerous times which lead to a herky-jerky first quarter. Rodgers only threw the ball eight times, completing two of those for a whooping 16 yards and he had an interception. James Starks struggled running the ball and had a fumble during his time. The starters were in and out so fast or didn’t even play it was really tough to see if this team has made any big strides in the offseason. The Packers first possession shows this perfectly.
Packers first play Rodgers scrambles and throws the ball away as nobody is open. Next play Starks runs for a couple of yards but basically gets stuffed and is forced to fight for the two or three yards he is credited for. Then on third the Packers convert on a quick throw from Rodgers. Now I could have watched this and thought it was from last season. On the defensive side of the ball the Packers played decent but still gave up some large passing plays. Again, very similar to last season.
So what can we take away from this game? Really nothing. Rodgers looked pressured and had to scramble for most of his pass attempts but that could be just the offensive line working out the kinks. The defense looked the same as last year but nobody was expecting a fix over night. The running game still isn’t really there but again that wasn’t a quick fix type deal. A lot of the Packers starters didn’t even suit up for this game. Other than Desmond Bishop getting hurt, not a whole lot happened for the Packers first unit.
Other than Tim Masthay punting the ball all over the field.
Here are some other quick thoughts from the game.
- Did I mention how pointless this first pre-season game is? Other than having nobody really play, we are already hit with an injury as Desmond Bishop had to be helped off the field and then carted into the locker room. The last thing you want from a game that means nothing is to have a starter get hurt. And it just wasn’t this game. Mike Vick had to come out of the game after hurting his hand in the Eagles pre-season game. The NFL really needs to figure out what it wants to do with the pre-season. Four games seems like too many and hardly anybody watches them anyways.
- Speaking of things the NFL needs to figure out is there referee situation. If we are stuck with this “rent-a-refs” the whole season I may go crazy. The crew for ESPN took every chance they could to call them replacement refs and these replacement refs are pretty bad. They are using the pre-season for the same reason the players are. They looked lost and confused at times and really had some terrible calls. This could be a big problem going forward.
- It seems after this game the only person who hasn’t missed a beat is Tim Masthay, but he is a punter so….
- Did I mention how pointless and boring this game was?
I don’t mean to complain too much but nothing can really be taken away from this game. We really just have to wait and see how the team progress and hope they are hitting their stride as the games start to matter.
A random side rant here: When thinking about it the concept of “pre-season” is so strange. These guys get months to train for their job every year. Imagine if everyday normal people got a chance to do this. You get a couple of months to train for you job and then you do your job for real yet you are getting paid the whole time. But the big idea is just coming. Forget boring debates and campaign speeches, for presidential races just make the top four candidates compete in a “pre-season” of their own where they are forced to step into office and show what they got by handling real issues the country is facing. Enough speeches, show me what you got in real time. How could this idea go wrong?
Well now that that is out of the way we can all go in peace and wait for the next Packers pre-season game. Hopefully next time we can take away a little more from the game and hopefully it is good news. But for now there is not much to discuss. The team looked mostly the same as last year, which is a team that went 15-1 in the regular season. Even though they lost and didn’t look to good the Packers should be fine come regular season. Lets just all move on from this game. I know I have.
