The Michigan Wolverines picked up their first commitment of the 2014 recruiting class on Thursday night when Michael Ferns (Saint Clairsville, Ohio) committed. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound, Ferns is considered the top linebacker in the state of Ohio and one of the elite recruits nationally. Ohiopreps.com ranks him the #2 overall recruit in the state of Ohio.

Ferns is also a track standout at St. Clairsville and has been clocked at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash. As a sophomore he registered 144 tackles and also rushed for 441 yards and 6 TDs. Ferns earned honorable mention All-State honors for his efforts.

Ferns carries a 4.0 GPA and plans to graduate from high school in December of his senior season and enroll early at Michigan.
