North Carolina Basketball: Wayne Selden cuts his list to six, UNC is not part of it

As the gridiron comes closer and closer to the beginning of the season (for more about UNC football check out my Saturday’s Pushing the Envelope podcast, where I talked about just that), here is a small tid bit from the North Carolina basketball side of things. Wayne Selden, a 6’4″/200 lbs combo guard/forward who reclassified from the 2014 class to the `13, has cut his list from 13 to six schools, and UNC is not part of it. The young man, who goes to the same prep school, Tilton, that has student athletes such as Nerlens Noel (Kentucky) and Georges Niang (Iowa State), seems to be another player who might be able to be a star at the next level. For the final half dozen schools he will be a good pick up no time line has been set for when he will take his official visits, including which school he won’t visit.

While it’s always hard for any fan base to be out of the race of the top players in the nation, especially when you are a top notch program like Carolina, I can see why the UNC/Selden mix was going to be a long shot. And while who would not want to have a player like the young man from New Hampshire, who plays for BABC in the AAU circuit, that thrives in the open floor, who can shoot decently well, drive strong to the basket and a decent creator anywhere on the court, the reality is that UNC is pretty filled up on the perimeter and has already extended two other scholarships at that position.

The bigger question for me right now will be what does the North Carolina basketball coaching staff will do moving forward. Will head coach Williams wait to see what his two targets at that position will do or is he going to offer to others? My gut feeling is going to be we will see someone else getting an offer, as coach Williams always has a “plan b” to anything, and because one of the two targets is Trey Williams, who does not seem like he is coming to UNC.
