Big Ten Football Predictions- The Results Article

Week One record:  11-1…Record so far….11-1.

Minnesota-30 UNLV-27 3OT  CORRECT…..Did I tell you that Cornett was a bright spot?…25 carries, 127 yds and 2 TDs…..The Gophers were solid…and any time they can go two time zones away and get a W they will take it….The Minnesota fan I usually talk to each and every week didn’t seem to sold on the Phers chances…I told him not to worry…but I think I was more impressed with the Rebels…they look like they should hover around .500 this year…

Boise State-13 Michigan State-17…CORRECT…I watched the 2nd quarter….this is what I saw….Maxwell throw an INT….Gholston get a personal foul….MSU punt…MSU’s punter gets a personal foul for hitting the returner out of bounds…Maxwell throws his 2nd INT for a pick 6…but all that being said…the Broncos couldn’t move the ball…both teams have a lot of work to do before they get back to where they think they should be…

Miami-10 Ohio State-56….CORRECT…Uhhh..did anyone see the day that Braxton Miller had?….He finished 14-24 for 207 and 2 TD’s..then he set an OSU record for rushing yds by a QB with 161 and another score….but the highlight of the day was WR Devin Smith’s TD catch…if you haven’t seen it…stop what you are doing, Google Devin Smith and watch…one of the best catches ever…period.

Ohio-24 Penn State 14…MISS…how many times have you heard someone say after a big upset….”i almost picked that”. I have learned in the documented prediction ‘business’…and I think this goes for life as well…trust your gut and go with your first instinct…and Ohio losing to the Nittany Lions was my first instinct…it was…but I struggled with changing it before I submitted my picks… Almost changed it to a Bobcat W…but i trusted my gut..and it was wrong….all that being said…it may be a long time before I pick Penn State to win again…when do they play Indiana?

Northwestern-42 Syracuse-41…CORRECT…The story of this game was Orange QB Ryan Nissib…this fella went 45-66 for 482 yards and 4 TD’s…..seriously?…almost 500 yds passing?…what a wild affair…told you it may be the best game of the day…Kain Colter got a little banged up but told head coach Pat Fitzgerald that backup QB Trevor Siemian probably gives NW a better chance to win….very interesting.

Western Michigan-7 Illinois-24…CORRECT…Talk about a weekend where starting QB’s get hurt….Colter goes down for NW and Nathan Scheelhaase went down for Illinois….and when Schoolhouse Nate went down…so did the offense…mustering just a measly 8 yards from late in the third quarter until the final gun….yeah….get Nate healthy.

Iowa-18 Northern Illinois-17…CORRECT…Why does everyone get worried in fall camp when the majority of the Hawkeye HB corp get arrested or leaves school or gets injured?….If nothing else, the Iowa football program has shown that  their HB raffle is good enough to get them through a season…35 minutes before kickoff, the Hawkeye SID makes an announcement and asks the individual seated in section 23, row 75, seat 17 come to the locker room area….you have been selected to be the Iowa starting HB this week…it works…Damon Bullock won this week…30 carries 150 yds and a TD…

Southern Mississippi-20 Nebraska-49…CORRECT…well…here’s a QB who actually did improve a lot in the offseason…but one game does not a season make…right?…Taylor Martinez went 26-34 for 354 and threw for 5 TD’s….the shocker was that Rex Burkhead went down with what is believed to be a ACL injury…we will wait and see…if the Corn has to depend on the arm of Martinez to get to Indy…they are in trouble…

Eastern Kentucky-6 Purdue-48…CORRECT…this is what the Boilermakers had to do…really crank the Colonels…Robert Marve threw for 295 and 3 TD’s…that’s the most yardage he’s thrown for since his backup days as a Hurricane to Vinny Testaverde…just kidding…since 2008…but how about Kawann Short?…add two more blocked kicks to his resume…a FG and an extra point…he has blocked six kicks in his career…stunning..

Northern Iowa-21 Wisconsin-26…CORRECT…Zoinks…Ethan Hemer…how about getting those hands up?….had it not been for knocking that 4th and 1 pass down…the Panthers may have shocked the world beating the Badgers in Madison…Ball got his 120 and a TD and the new rent-a-center (ACC) QB Danny O’Brien was prolific 19 of 23 for 219 and two scores…but man was it scary as the Badgers sat on this lead and got big for their britches….maybe it’s all that cheese.

Indiana State-17 Indiana-24…CORRECT…Honestly…I didn’t see one second of this game…I was wasting my time watching another one…but from what I gather…IU QB Tre Roberson looked like a different man…26-36 for a career high 280 yds……plus the Hoosiers defense stopped the Sycamore offense on their last three drives of the game….Be careful Kevin Wilson…you may have yourself the making of a football team down there…

Michigan-14 Alabama-41…CORRECT…Let’s see is there anything that a Michigan fan can hang their hat on after this humiliating game?….Hmmm…Will Hagerup looked good…6 punts for 51.3 average…and a long of 62…Alabama is one of the best football teams in the country…their skilled players are some of the best…their linemen are huge and quick on their feet…Michigan has a long way to go to be where the Crimson Tide is right now.

  1. Tough opener for Michigan, they will be ok though. I don’t think any other Big Ten team would have fared much better against the Tide.

    • Maybe not….but if your statement is true, then it shows the Big Ten has a much longer way to go to be competitive with the SEC schools….and that may be a harsh reality for most Big Ten fans…
