After the Toronto Blue Jays swept the Red Sox this past weekend, I was feeling good about how things were going for the team as they got ready to face the Seattle Mariners for three games.
The Jays came close in the first game, but came up short as they lost to the, Mariners 4-3.
Starting pitcher, Brandon Morrow had a very rough outing on the mound. In 4,2 innings pitched, he gave up 11 hits, four earned runs, one walk and struck out four batters.
In the second game, Ricky Romero was on the mound for the Jays. I was hoping beyond hope that he would get a win or at least a no decision.
In the first couple of innings, it looked as if Romero’s teammates were trying everything they could out in the field to get him a win.
Miguel Olivo of the Mariners got things started with a solo home run in the second inning.
The Mariners took a three run lead at the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Edwin Encarnacion hit a two run homer, his 39th of the season. I thought “great, maybe they’ll tie it up or either go ahead.
In the fifth inning, Romero ran into a little bit of trouble and had to be pulled. Also in the inning, the Jays got out of a bases loaded jam. At this point I thought the Jays had the momentum to win this game. Instead, they were unable to generate any offense. In fact, they couldn’t get anybody on base. The final score was 3-2 for the Mariners. Romero suffered his 13th straight loss.
The Jays avoided the sweep tonight by hammering the Mariners 8-3.
Edwin hit his 40th home run of the season and hit the 100 RBI plateau with a 102. I think this guy is in the running for the American League Most Valuable Player this year. If he isn’t, he should be in my humble opinion. The stats. speak for themselves.
I would also want to recognize Jay’s catcher, Jeff Mathis who went four for four at the plate. Well Done Jeff!
As for starting pitcher, Henderson Alvarez, he gave up five hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out two batters in seven innings pitched.
Edwin Encarnacion hit his 40th home run of the season and now has 102 RBIs
The Jays host the Boston Red Sox for a three game series this weekend. Can the Jays sweep the Sox again like they did last week? We can only watch and see.
