The Michigan Wolverines delivered a big 63-13 win on Saturday, as expected.
With 6 touchdowns and 42 points on the board before the half, more than a few of the 110,708 found little reason to return to their seats. UMass probably felt the same.
Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson ran wild on the Minutemen with several spectacular runs racking up 106 yards and a TD on 10 carries, despite having 50+ yards wiped out by penalties.
Michigan’s defense got off to what seemed like a slow start, allowing UMass to drive the length of the field and connect on a field goal. However, by halftime it was clear that this was a mere anomaly. The defense dominated.
Sophomore defensive end, Frank Clark made a spectacular play on UMass’ first drive knocking down a pass on 3rd and goal that lead to a Minutemen field goal. UMass would not score an offensive touchdown all day long, settling for 2 field goals and a TD off an errant Denard Robinson pass that was intercepted.
For Michigan this was a reassuring victory after a shaky 1-1 start to the 2012 campaign. Offensively this was about as balanced of an attack as they come ; 294 yards rushing, 291 yards passing. Denard Robinson spread the football among 9 different receivers while a total of 8 players, including senior left-tackle Taylor Lewan off a recovered fumble, would score touchdowns.
This game was the softest part of Michigan’s schedule and they took care of business for win number 2. Next up for the Wolverines is the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Statistically and on a W-L basis, this is one of Denard Robinson’s best matchups as a starting quarterback. Michigan will be looking for history to repeat itself.
