After reporting about Late Night with Roy just a couple of hours ago, let me give you more information about the head coach of the North Carolina basketball team. As most of the major sites are reporting, the results from the September 19 operation have come back, and the tumor, called oncocytoma (pronounced ON-ko-sigh-TOE-muh), has been determined to be benign. Even better news is that these type of tumors do not spread.
“We are pleased with how well Coach Williams is doing. If everything continues to progress as expected, he should be back to his normal activities soon,” says Dr. Eric Wallen, professor of urology at UNC, who led the surgical team.
Coach Williams still has another tumor on his left kidney. The Doctors stated that because the tumor on his right kidney was benign there is a good chance that it will be the same case on the left one. Next week coach Williams will head back to the hospital and have a biopsy. If the results come back that the tumor on his right kidney is an oncocytoma, the second surgery, scheduled for next month, will not be needed.
I can not say how great of news this is, first and foremost for Roy Williams the man, not the coach, for his family as well. Then for Roy Williams the coach, his staff, the team, the program and of course the fans. Let me wish coach Williams all the best as he recovers from the first operation and to hoping that the second tumor is like this one and he will not need to be under the knife once again and the man at the helm of the program won’t have to deal with cancer.
