Notre Dame has opted to cancel the annual series with Michigan in football. “The decision to cancel games in 2015-17 was Notre Dame’s and not ours,” said Dave Brandon. “We value our annual rivalry with Notre Dame but will have to see what the future holds for any continuation of the series. This cancellation presents new scheduling opportunities for our program and provides a chance to create some new rivalries.”
The final two games in the rivalry will be played on September 7th 2013 at Michigan Stadium and on September 6th 2014 at Notre Dame Stadium. This move by Notre Dame is an aftereffect of their decision to add 5 ACC schools to the schedule every year. Apparently the Fighting Irish wanted to dilute their schedule a bit by removing Michigan from the equation.
They have reportedly decided to add Northwestern to their schedule in 2014 and 2018.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Michigan said, to hell with Notre Dame and canceled the 2014 game.
Michigan has played Notre Dame 40 times, which is the most for U-M against any non-conference foe.
