When Detroit Lions’ GM Martin Mayhew pulled the trigger to draft defensive tackle Nick Fairley in the first round of last year’s draft, I was puzzled.
When he decided to take wide receiver Ryan Broyles in the second round this year, I was upset.
The Lions ranked 5th in offense last year and 23rd in defense. It seemed a must to get a defensive back after Eric Wright left Detroit in favor of Tampa Bay. However, Mayhew didn’t agree.
The facts are in, and the Lions haven’t drafted well historically. Since they took Barry Sanders an eternity ago, they have drafted as poorly as any team in the NFL (see the 2008 season). Lately, they have been turning it around by drafting players like Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh. These players form a core of young talent that the Lions can rely on for years.
But you have to continue to reload every single year, and the Lions have done poorly over the past two years.

Hard to argue with that my friend. I fear that the Lions are in the process of wasting a full year of some really special talent due to their lack of a secondary, which will prevent them from making the playoffs this year.
