Edwin Encarnacion
Before I get to anything else, I would like to pose a question to you. Should Edwin Encarnacion be considered a candidate for the Amercian League Most Valuable Player Award despite being on a losing team? I say yes. He is having a career year. Look at these numbers folks. a .280 batting average, 152 hits, 93 runs scored, 24 doubles, 42 home runs and 110 RBIs. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he should win the award, all I’m saying he shouldn’t be dismissed as a candidate.
After splitting a series with the Baltimore Orioles, I didn’t know what to expect from the Toronto Blue Jays when they faced the New York Yankees for four games.
Well, the Jays took game one, shutting out the Yankees 6-0. Starting pitcher, Brandon Morrow had a very good night on the mound, giving up only four hits, no earned runs, three walks, and struck out three batters in seven innings pitched.
The offensive star of the game for the Jays was Edwin Encarnacion, who went three for four and collected three RBIs.
The Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in game two.
In the bottom of the second inning, down by three runs, the Jays had a great opportunity to tie or even take the lead with the bases loaded. However, just like they have done far too often this season, they were unable to cash in any runs.
Colby Rasmus gave the Jays fans a glimmer of hope in the bottom of the fifth inning when he hit a solo home run to cut the Yankees lead to 3-1.
Unfortunately, Russell Martin dashed my hopes of a Blue Jay comeback as he hit a three run blast at the top of the sixth inning to make it 6-1.
Down 8-2, Adam Lind made it a little bit interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning when he hit a two run homer to make it 8-4 Yankees.
The Yankees scored three more runs in the final two innings and went away with 11-4 victory.
Toronto came from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Yankees in the third game 3-2. Rajai Davis had a good day at the plate, going three for four, scoring one run, and collecting two RBIs.
Starting pitcher, Ricky Romero had to leave the game after the third inning for what appeared to be an injury to his foot.
It looked as if the Jays were going to win the series this afternoon when they were up 5-1, but the Yankees proved once again why they’re still one of the best offensive teams in the league as they made a huge comeback to beat Toronto 9-6.
The Blue Jays have only three games left in the 2012 season. Starting tomorrow night, they will host the Minnesota Twins.
