Big Ten Football Week 7 Preview

Nebraska and Penn State have bye’s this week…

My Record….44-13    77.1%

Iowa (3-2, 1-0) @ Michigan State (4-2, 1-1)     Noon     ESPN:  The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series with Michigan State 22-19-2…Iowa has won 4 of the last 7 meetings…there hasn’t been a winning streak longer than 3 games in this series since the early 80’s…so historically, it’s been quite an evenly balanced matchup…that being said, MSU had won 4 straight at the Smoke Stack until that fantastic 2009 15-13 game…these are two teams that are going to have to run the ball to win…MSU leads the Big Ten in rush defense and Iowa is 3rd…they rank the same in team defense too…the matchup to watch is two-fold..if Iowa can get HB Mark Weisman in a groove, then it could spell trouble for Michigan State…but if not, then James Vandenberg is going to have to win it for the Hawkeyes…I just don’t think he will be able to…I like MSU to squeak by Iowa 20-13.

Northwestern (5-1, 1-1)  @  Minnesota (4-1, 0-1)     Noon     ESPN2:   The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 50-32-5…The Wildcats have won 4 of the last 5 games including their only previous meeting at TCF Bank Field in 2010 29-28…the loser of this one will pretty much be eliminated from a chance to win the Legends Division…so a lot is at stake…word out of the Gopher Hole is that physically, MarQueis Gray maybe have recovered from his banged up knee/ankle injury…but conditioning and his passing ability may be a bit rusty…I think if he goes, the Pher’s have a shot..but if the Wildcats can prevent an early lapse in this one, they should win it…I like Northwestern with Trevor Siemian and Kain Colter to get the tough road win…and folks..this may be the game of the day in the Big Ten on Saturday..Northwestern wins 35-25.

Wisconsin (4-2, 1-1)  @  Purdue (3-2, 0-1)     Noon     Big Ten Network:   The Badgers lead the all-time series 42-29-8….Wisconsin has won the last 6 meetings and the last 4 played at Ross-Ade…the last time Purdue beat Wisconsin in West Lafayette was in 1997….I think the Boilers are upset at how they played last week and they marked on their calendars that this mini-home stand vs Michigan and Wisconsin was going to either give them a shot at the Leaders title or not…and in my eyes..these are the only two legit teams that can play for it…so to me, the winner here SHOULD play for the Big Ten title…I like for Purdue to get their passing game going …but it will have to be a more vertical passing game..I am not so sure they have success going dink and dunk vs Wisconsin..Bielema will be ready for that…I like Purdue to get a 28-24 win at home.

Illinois (2-4, 0-2)  @  Michigan (3-2, 1-0)     3:30pm     ABC:  Michigan leads the all-time series 68-23-2…the Wolverines have won 8 of the last 10 meetings including 2 straight…I just get the feeling that this Michigan team is putting together a nice run…the defense has played very well in its last two games and is currently ranked #2 in the Big Ten they are #1 vs the pass and 10th vs the run….therein lies the matchup of the game…can Illinois bring their rushing attack which is dead last in the Big Ten right now and beat the Wolverines?…I don’t think so….I think the Wolverines win this one big..I think they have very little trouble this Saturday and beat the Fighting Illini 42-17.

Ohio State (6-0, 2-0)  @  Indiana (2-3, 0-2)     8:00pm     Big Ten Network:   The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 68-9-4…Indiana hasn’t beaten Ohio State in the last 19 tries (18-0-1)..the last Hoosier win came in 1988 in Bloomington…statistically speaking these are 2 of the top 3 offensive teams in the Big Ten and two of the worst defensive teams…OSU is #2 rushing team and IU is the #1 passing team…and based on last weeks game, the Buckeyes better be ready when the ball gets kicked off…because the Hoosiers stunned the Spartans last week….so this will be a great game to watch…it would be tough to take the Hoosiers in this one….but can you imagine if they won?….Buckeyes will win 56-48 in 3OT’s…
