Big Ten Football Week 8 Preview

Illinois has a much needed bye this week….even during the bye they are getting 5 and a half…

My Record….47-15     75.8%

Purdue (3-3, 0-2)  @  Ohio State (7-0, 3-0)     Noon     ABC:   The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 38-14-2…Purdue has won 2 of the last 3 meetings but both of those were in West Lafayette…Ohio State has won 8 straight at the Shoe..the last Boiler win in Columbus was in 1988….Danny Hope needs to be very careful here..the last two games have really been downers to the Boiler nation and important losses to the team….he is in danger of losing this team…if a year from now Danny Hope is in danger of losing his job…you can look back to this three game stretch and see where the marriage got a little rocky…Purdue has had the Buckeyes number recently…but I think that ends with the arrival of Urban Meyer…Bucks win another close one 34-28.

Minnesota (4-2, 0-2)  @ Wisconsin (5-2, 2-1)     Noon     ESPNU:   The Gophers lead the all-time series with Wisconsin 57-54-8…each team holds a pretty decent advantage at home…Wisconsin has won the last 8 meetings, however the Badgers have also won the last 8 games played in Madison…Overall…Wisconsin has won 15 of the last 17 meetings…The Paul Bunyan Axe on the line in Madison this week and recently all of axe-swinging has been done by the cheeseheads…Can Montee’ Ball keep his momentum going?…that will be what determines who wins this game…the Gopher run defense sits at #8 in the Big Ten while the Badgers have steadily climbed into the top 5 for rushing offense…the Gophers have been toying with the idea of moving stud QB MarQueis Gray back to WR…remember Big Ten fans..he came to Minnesota as a QB, was switched to WR in 2010 and then back to QB in 2011…so now, because there are less reps in practice at WR…coach Jerry Kill is tinkering with that…seems like a stretch..The Ball show rolls on as Wisconsin wins 28-20.

Michigan State (4-3, 1-2)  @ Michigan (4-2, 2-0)    3:30pm     Big Ten Network:   Michigan leads the all-time series 67-32-5…MSU has won the last 4 meetings and has only won 4 times in Ann Arbor since 1980…Michigan fans..if this recent slide (4 straight L’s including two straight in Ann Arbor) vs MSU has you down…think of this…from 1950-1967 MSU won 10 of 12 with a tie…including a stretch where they won 6 of 7…my initial reaction on Monday was UM has the best D in the Big Ten, MSU is struggling..Michigan wins easy…but then I thought…Pat Narduzzi (MSU defensive coordinator) has done a remarkable job containing Denard Robinson..#16 is completing less than 50% of his passes, thrown 4 INT’s and 2 TD’s vs MSU and rushing…he has lost 61 yards and is averaging 2.8 per carry…those are his worst numbers vs any opponent in his career..he only has 119 yards rushing vs MSU in three games…now consider that Denard is responsible for 75.8% of UM’s offense and almost 58% of it is rushing total for the 2012 season…and we all know Denard struggles vs aggressive defenses when he is forced to be a passer..and MSU has the most aggressive defense that UM will…how will Michigan score?…Brady Hooke and his perfect home record (11-0) will find a way…UM wins 21-17.

Indiana (2-4, 0-3)  @  Navy (3-3, 1-2)    3:30pm     CBS Sports Network:   Is there any way in which two losses to Michigan State and Ohio State can be considered a positive?  I think that’s how 2nd year coach Kevin Wilson has to keep his players from jumping off of bridges in Indiana..I don’t know..are there any bridges in Indiana?..but if there are, I’m sure some Hoosier footballers were contemplating the plunge…two heartbreakers to a wannabe big name and a big name…but this week’s game presents a different kind of challenge…playing a team you should beat..but on the road…I think the Hoosiers will get it done with a heavy dose of Stephen Houston…Hoosiers win at Navy 38-24.

Nebraska (4-2, 1-1)  @ Northwestern (6-1, 2-1)     3:30pm     ESPN2:   The Corn leads the all-time series 3-2…Northwestern won last year’s meeting and the only meeting ever in Evanston in 1931…the question that will answer who wins this game is this;  Can the Wildcats stop the Corn rushing attack?…I think last year proved that Nebraska can’t stop the nickel and dime attack of Pat Fitzgerald…and the Cats are a better offensive team in 2012…so Bo Pelini has his work cut out for him…Northwestern won’t get an advantage from its home crowd either…the Wildcat faithful aren’t known for being staunch supporters..I think this has the potential to be an absolute shootout…I like the Cats to take care of business at Ryan Field…NW wins its 2nd straight vs the Corn..Fitzy 56-52.

Penn State (4-2, 2-0)  @  Iowa (4-2, 2-0)     8:00pm     Big Ten Network:     The series is all square at 12 wins each….that being written, the Hawkeyes have won the last 4 meetings at Kinnick…THAT also being written, Penn State has beaten Iowa at Kinnick more often than they have at Beaver Stadium…enough of that…Iowa certainly makes you play their game don’t they?…a very dull brand of uninspiring football where running the ball, playing solid defense and throwing the ball on 3rd and 9 to a TE that does a quick 3 yard and out pattern is ‘risky’ or ‘rolling the dice’…this winner of this one may actually be the team that scores first…I like Iowa to go to 3-0 in the Big Ten as the Nittany Lions haven’t played a road game since September…Hawkeyes keep rolling, if you can call it that….Iowa wins 3-0.

Great article.. I enjoy reading the predictions and results articles every week. I think the score of the PSU/Iowa game is going to be higher than 3-0 though lol.

That Nebraska at Northwestern match up should be a dandy. I can’t wait to see how it shakes out.
Ahh, Michigan State at Michigan, can’t wait to get there on Saturday and see Denard rise up and the defense lock down.
