UNC Basketball: Heels in the Pro’s ~ NBA (10/17/12)

As the weekend approaches, meaning that the showdown between UNC and Duke… in football that is comes closer and closer, there is always pre season National Basketball Association to look at for the former UNC basketball players. Which means that Heels in the Pro’s NBA Style is back on this site, this time checking out the games from 10/17, where in all there were seven games on the schedule. All of them had a touch of carolina in them, one with a former Tar Heel on both rosters. So, since this is going to be a very long edition of Heels in the Pro’s NBA Style, let’s get it going with the October 17 edition of it…

The first game of the night was Toronto Raptors [Eastern Conference ~ Atlantic Division] (1-1 in the preason) hosting the team from the nation’s capital, the Washington Wizards [Eastern Conference ~ Southeast Division] (1-2 in the pre season) in the only game these two franchises will play against one another before the regular season. The game, which lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes, was played in front of 11,750 (max capacity: 19,800) at the Air Canada Centre. For the home squad, which ended last season at 23-43 (4th in the division), it’s Ed Davis (@eddavis32 on twitter), who the Raptors exercised his 4th year option, to get 22 minutes coming off the bench. In that time frame the former Heel big man scored eight points (4 for 7 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 0 for 0) to go with nine rebounds, a block and a pair of TOs while having a 0 in points differential. As far as the game went it was Toronto squeaking by in this one, defeating Washington by three points, 104 to 101. With the W the Raptors are now 2 and 1 in the pre season and will play their next game on Friday, October 19, as they host the New York Knicks.

The next game on the slate as the Cleveland Cavaliers [Eastern Conference ~ Central Division] (3-2 in the pre season) heading to the east coast to take on the Philadelphia 76′ers [Eastern Conference ~ Atlantic Division] (2-1 in the pre season) in the only game in the pre season between these two squads. The game, which was played at the Wells Fargo Center in front of a crowd that numbered 8,170 (max capacity: ), lasted 2 hours and seven minutes. For the road team it’s rookie Tyler Zeller (@ZellerTyler on twitter), who came off the bench for the Cavs and played a total of 13 minutes. In that time frame the seven footer scored a half dozen points (3 for 6 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 0 for 0) to go with a pair of rebounds and three turnovers while having a points differential of -7. In the end it was Philadelphia winning this one, disposing of Cleveland easily by the final of 113 to 99. With the loss the Cavaliers, who ended last season at 21-45, are .500 with a 3 and 3 record and will be next on the hardwood on 10/23 against the Indiana Pacers.

Moving on to the third game of the night it’s the Memphis Grizzlies [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] (2-1 in the pre season) heading to the lone star state to take on the Houston Rockets [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] in the only match up between these two Southwest divisional foes in the pre season. The game was played at the Toyota Center in front of 11,647 (max capacity: 18,043) and lasted 2 and a half hours. For the visiting team it’s former UNC basketball player and national champion Wayne Ellington (@WayneElli22 on twitter), who started for the Grizzlies and played a total of 19 minutes. In all the shooting guard scored eight points (3 for 6 ~ 0 for 2 ~ 2 for 2) to go with a board while registering a points differential of +3. As far as the match up of these division foes went it was Houston winning this one beating Memphis by seven, with the final tally being 109 to 102. With the loss the Grizzlies, who finished `11-`12 at 41-25, slide to 2 and 2 in the pre season and come back in action on 10/18 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The halfway mark of this edition of Heels in the Pro’s NBA Style gives us the match up between two franchises with former UNC basketball players on each of them. Phoenix Suns [Western Conference ~ Pacific Division] (1-1 in the pre season) go to the lone star state to take on the Dallas Mavericks [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] (2-1 in the pre season) in the only time the two will face off before the regular season. The game was played in front of an attendance of 17,049 (max capacity: 19,600) at the American Airlines Center and took 2 hours and 15 minutes. For the traveling team it’s rookie point guard Kendall Marshall (@KButter5 on twitter). However for the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft did not play… “DNP ~ Coach’s Decision”. On the other side it’s a pair of former Tar Heels on the team. First off it’s Brandan Wright (@bwright34 on twitter), who comes off the bench for the Mavs, getting 13 minutes. In that time the 6’10″ power forward scored three points (0 for 6 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 3 for 4) to go with three rebounds, a couple of blocks, an assist and two turnovers while having a pts differential of 0. The other player coming from Chapel Hill it’s veteran guard Vince Carter (@mrvincecarter15 on twitter), who also comes off the pine and plays a total of 19 minutes. For the shooting guard it’s a 15 points performance (5 for 11 ~ 3 for 8 ~ 2 for 2) to go with seven boards, an assist, a steal and a pair of TOs while having a 0 points differential. Meanwhile, in the game, it was Phoenix winning this one by half a dozen, defeating Dallas by the final of 100 to 94. With the win the Suns are now 2 and 1 in the pre season while the loss drops the Mavs to 2 and 2.

The next match up we have two franchises from California as the Golden State Warriors [Western Conference ~ Pacific Division] (3-1 in the pre season) going to play against the the Sacramento Kings [Western Conference ~ Pacific Division] (2-0 in the pre season) in the only match up between these two division foes. The game was played at the Power Balance Pavillion in front of a crowd that numbered 10,708 (max capacity: 17,317) and lasted close to 2 and a half hours. For the visiting squad it’s rookie small forward Harrison Barnes (@HBarnes on twitter) who once again started for the Warriors and played 21 minutes. In that time the 6’8″ forward scored five points (2 for 5 ~ 1 for 3 ~ 0 for 0) to go with three boards and a turnover while having a -13 pts diffferential. As far as the game went it was Golden State taking this one by double digits, beating Sacramento 98 to 88. With the W the Warriors are now 4 and 1 in the pre season and will be back in action on 10/19 as they play on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The second to last game has the Denver Nuggets [Western Conference ~ Northwest Division] (3-0 in the pre season) going to to Rip City to take on the Portland Trail Blazers [Western Conference ~ Northwest Division] (2-1 in the pre season) in what is the only pre season clash between these two. The game, played at the Rose Garden in front of 17,856 (max capacity: 19,980), lasted 2 hours and ten minutes. For the team from the Mile High city it is Ty Lawson (@TyLawson3 on twitter), who seems very close to an extension with the Nuggets, but does not play in this one due to an elbow injury that has kept him out of the previous game as well. As far as the game went it was a lopsided win by Portland, defeating Denver by 17, with the final tally being 97 to 80. With the loss the Nuggets slide to 3-1 in the pre season, getting the possibility to turn things around on Sunday, October 21, traveling to Oklahoma City.

And we close out this session with the Utah Jazz [Western Conference ~ Northwest Division] (3-1 in the pre season) heading to the Golden State to take on the Los Angeles Clippers [Western Conference ~ Pacific Division] (2-1 in the pre season) in the first of two match ups for these squads. The game was played at the Staple Center in front of 14,617 (max capacity: 19,060) and lasted just over 2 hours and twenty minutes. For the visiting squad it’s newly acquired Marvin Williams (no twitter account for Williams), who started for the Jazz and got a total of 24 minutes. In that time the forward scored eight points (3 for 7 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 1 for 1) to go with four rebounds and two TOs while having a 0 pts differential. In the end, it was Los Angeles winning a close one edging out Utah by a bucket, with the total being 96 to 94. With the loss the Jazz slide to 3 and 2 in the pre season and will play once again on 10/20 versus the LA Clippers once again, this time at home.
