UNC Basketball: Heels in the Pro’s ~ NBA (10/20/12)

After the fan base watched the rivalry game between Carolina and Duke, which the Blue Devils won at Wallace Wade Stadium, the Heels fan base is back to watching the pro’s with the National Football League and, of course, the National Basketball Association. Which means that it’s once again time for the daily recap called Heels in the Pro’s NBA Style for 10/20/12. In all there were seven games on the schedule and all of them had a touch of carolina blue. So, let’s get going with this quite large edition of Heels in the Pro’s NBA for Saturday, October 20, 2012…

The first game on the slate it’s the San Antonio Spurs [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] (3-1 in the pre season) going to the sunshine state to take on the Miami Heat [Eastern Conference ~ Southeast Division] (2-2 in the pre season) in the only East/West game between these two team in the pre season. The game, played at the American Airlines in front of packed house of 19,600, lasted 2 hours and eleven minutes. For the team from the lone star state it’s Danny Green (@DGreen_14 on twitter), who starts for the Spurs and plays 29 minutes. In that time the 6’6″ guard scored a game high 17 points (6 for 10 ~ 5 for 8 ~ 0 for 0) to go with four rebounds, an assist and a TO while having a +4 points differential. In the end, as far as the game went, it was Miami winning this game, beating San Antonio by 3, with the final being 104 to 101. With the loss the Spurs fall to 3 and 2 in the pre season and will have a chance to bounce back on 10/21 as they take on another team from Florida in the Orlando Magic.

The next game on the slate is the one that has the Dallas Mavericks [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] (2-2 in the pre season) going to the east coast to take on the Atlanta Hawks [Eastern Conference ~ Southeast Division] (3-2 in the pre season) in the only East/West clash between these squads. The game, which took almost 2 and a half hours, was played in front of 9.935 fans (max capacity: 18,729) at the Philips Arena. For the team from Texas it’s a pair of former UNC basketball players. The first one is Brandan Wright (@bwright34 on twitter), who comes off the bench for the Mavs, and plays a total of 21 minutes. In that time the 6’10″ power forward scored nine points (3 for 6 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 3 for 3) to go along with four rebounds, two blocks while having a points differential of -14. The other is Vince Carter (@mrvincecarter15 on twitter), who also comes off the pine, playing for 24 minutes. In that time the shooting guard had 13 points (3 for 8 ~ 1 for 5 ~ 6 for 7) to go with three boards, an assist, a steal while having a -16 points differential. The game went to Atlanta by 16, defeating Dallas by the final tally of 110 to 94. With the loss the Mavs slide to 2 and 3 on the pre season and will try to get back to .500 whe they play on 10/22, when they host the New Orleans Hornets.

The third game on the night has a former UNC basketball player on each of the team who were on the same national championship team while at North Carolina, as the Memphis Grizzlies [Western Conference ~ Southwest Division] (3-2 in the pre season) take on the Indiana Pacers [Eastern Conference ~ Central Division] (2-2 in the pre season) in yet again another East/West match up. The game, played at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 13,999 (max capacity: 18,165), lasted just over 2 hours and twenty minutes. For the visiting squad it’s Wayne Ellington (@WayneElli22 on twitter), who starts for the Grizzlies and plays 25 minutes. For the shooting guard it’s a seven points performance (2 for 8 ~ 1 for 4 ~ 2 for 2) to o with an assist and had a +2 points differential. On the other side it’s Tyler Hansbrough (@THANS50 on twitter), who started for the Pacers and got a total of 25 minutes in all. In that time the power forward scored eight points (2 for 10 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 4 for 4) to go along with 13 rebounds (4 offensive) and a pair of turnovers while having a points differential of -2. As far as the game went it was Indiana taking this low scoring affair, beating Memphis by the final of 83 to 80. With the W the Pacers are now 3 and 2 on the season, while the loss slides the Grizzlies to a .500 record of 3 and 3.

The next game on the slate is a clash of two teams in the Atlantic as the New York Knicks [Eastern Conference ~ Atlantic Division] (2-1 in the pre season) head to Albany to take on the Boston Celtics [Eastern Conference ~ Atlantic Division] (2-4 in the pre season) in the second of two match ups between these franchises, with the first one going to New York 98 to 95. The game, which lasted just a bit less than 2 hours and a quarter, was played at the Times Union Center. For the team from the Big Apple it’s a pair of former UNC basketball players. First off it’s newly acquired Raymond Felton (no twitter account for Felton), who starts for the Knicks and gets a total of 14 minutes. In that time frame the floor general had six points (3 for 7 ~ 0 for 3 ~ 0 for 0) to got with seven assists, one board and three TOs while having a +1 points differential. The other Tar Heel is Rasheed Wallace (no twitter account for Wallace), but the veteran big man did not see any action… “DNP ~ Coach’s Decision”. As far as the game went it was Boston taking this one by double digit, defeating New York 109 to 98. With the loss the Knicks slide to .500 at 2 and 2 and will be back in action on the 22nd as they travel to play the 76′ers.

As we move on it’s time to check out the next game of the night where Charlotte Bobcats [Eastern Conference ~ Southeast Division] (1-3 in the pre season) goes to Motor City to take on the Detroit Pistons [Eastern Conference ~ Central Division] (2-3 in the pre season) in the only match up between teams for the pre season and the first non East vs West game so far. For the team from the east coast it’s Brendan Haywood (@BreHay_30 on twitter), who starts for the Bobcats and plays a total of 28 minutes. In that time frame the seven footer center had 11 points (5 for 8 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 1 for 2) to go along with two rebounds, a block and three TOs while having a points differential of -7. As far as the game went, it was Detroit winning by five points, beating Charlotte 85 to 80. With the loss the Bobcats, who ended last season with the worst record in the NBA at 7 and 59, are now 1 and 4 and will try to turn this around when they next play on 10/23 vs the Heat.

In the second to last game we have the Milwaukee Bucks [Eastern Conference ~ Central Division] (2-2 in the pre season) hosting the Washington Wizards [Eastern Conference ~ Southeast Division] (2-2 in the pre season) in the only game between the two franchises in the pre season. The game, which lasted 2 hours and six minutes, was played in front of an attendance of 9,967 (max capacity: 18,717) at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. For the home team it’s should be John Henson (@_John_Henson_ on twitter), but the rookie forward is out for 7 to 10 days. As far as the game was concerned it was Washington beating Milwaukee by the final of 102 to 94. With the loss the Bucks slide down to below .500 at 2 and 3 and will have a chance to bounce back when they head north of the border to play vs the Raptors on 10/22.

 

And finally, closing out the night, it’s the Utah Jazz [Western Conference ~ Northwest Division] (3-2 in the pre season) hosting the Los Angeles Clippers [Western Conference ~ Pacific Division] (2-2 in the pre season) in the second game that the two teams played in the pre season, with the first one going to LA 96 to 94. This game, which was played at the Energy Solution Arena in front of a crowd that numbered 18,741 (max capacity: 19,911), lasted just over 2 hours and a quarter. For the home squad it’s Marvin Williams (no twitter account for Williams), who starts for the Jazz and plays a total of 28 minutes. In that time the power forward had a 18 points performance (6 for 9 ~ 3 for 4 ~ 3 for 4) to go along with eight rebounds, four steals, one assist and a pair of turnovers while having a points differential of +9. As far as the game was concerned it was Utah winning it, taking down LA by the final of 99 to 91. With the W the Jazz are now 4 and 2 in the pre season and will try to improve on that record on October 22, when they take on Portland on the road.

And that is it, the seven games for October 20, 2012, where in all there was talk about ten former UNC basketball players. And while not all played (due to injuries), some had very good games in all.
