Mavericks lose in OT to Miami Heat 119-109

Despite all the heroics we have come to expect from Dirk Nowitzki, the one-legged fade-away shot, the top of the key three pointers, the free throw shots we know will barely brush the net, all that combined could not prevent the Dallas Mavericks from going into an overtime game and eventually losing to the Miami Heat.

I don’t watch the games live anymore, it’s kind of one of my things. I feel that I will break the mojo that the Mavericks of old had and so over the last several seasons, I DVR the games and then watch them; also, it allows me to fast forward through the commercials if I want to. So when I came in, the game was over (didn’t know the outcome yet), but I overheard one of the analyst talking about Dirk and Dwyane Wade and the calls that each of them get and then he commented, “Well maybe when Dirk has been in the league a little bit longer, he’ll get the same type of calls that Wade gets and when he starts making that face he makes, we know that he’s in the flow of the game”, well I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I could only imagine.

Yes, folks, it’s time for me to get upon my soapbox about the fairness calls in the NBA, well for that matter, sports in general. It’s very obvious sometimes who gets the calls and who doesn’t. There was a time when players like Dirk would get some of the calls that was deserving of them to get, but it seems that we are back to catering to players like Wade and James and to heck with everyone else on the court and this game was no different.

Several times it was very obvious that Dirk either got hit on the head or on the arm and should have received the foul call, but didn’t; well after a while it does get very frustrating to anyone when you know you’re getting beat up and not getting the calls, but then you brush up against or breathe on the other team, and there you have a whistle. So I can understand Dirk’s discontent and frustration and the need to voice that opinion. Unfortunately in this case, it cost him a technical foul and cost his team a point and that point could have made a difference in the game and the win.

I counted 5 times when there should have been a call made in the Mavs favor for a foul but no call was made while 3 calls were made in the Heat’s favor when there should have not been a call made at all. Then at the end when Dirk was taken to the floor by Wade and then the breakaway score, yeah, that was real sportsmanship, but again, no call.

Here’s the thing, I don’t care who you are or who you are playing, call the games the same both ways no matter who the players are. All players deserve the same respect when they step out on the court. But when you favor one team over another or certain players over others, that’s where the frustration plays a factor in the game. Granted, Dallas had several opportunities to put this game away and didn’t, but still call it as evenly as possible.

Dallas did come to play ball though and they showed that by jumping out to an early lead and forcing Miami to call an early time-out and stayed strong throughout the first period, which is where they have been having the most trouble, the slow starts. But with the win in Washington the night before, I think helped them on a mental level to come into this game and be ready to play ball.

O J Mayo was back in form and finished the night with 30 points on 12 of 21 from the field which included 4 of 10 from behind the arc and also tacked on 6 assists for the night. Dirk had his best game of his short season by scoring 19 points on 7 of 15 from the field, including the tying points at the end of regulation, but also connected on 2 of 4 from the three-point line. Once these two play together more on the court and can work out the kinks and get used to each other, they will be a force to reckon with.

Vince Carter added 15 points to the stat sheet for the night, not bad after having a spectacular game the night before in Washington. Chris Kaman made his presence known in the middle and had 14 points with 10 rebounds for the night and Darren Collison added 11 points also.

Dallas finished the night with shooting 43.6% from the field and 35.7% from behind the arc and was 85% from the free throw line; they also did well on protecting the ball, for the most part, and only had 14 turnovers where Miami shot 47.2% from the field and 38.5 from behind the arc and 80.6 from the free throw line and had 10 turnovers. Dallas just edged Miami in rebounding, 47-46 for the night.

Yes we all know how good Miami is, they have been shoving it down out throats since LeBron and Chris Bosh “took their talents to South Beach” and it keeps being shoved even more on just how great a player LeBron is and well, blah, blah, blah…you get my point. Well the thing is, I thought this was Wade’s team; he always said this was his team, this was his house, but yet when you talk about Miami, it’s always LeBron and the Heat take on such and such or LeBron and the Heat done this or that, so where is Wade.

Well, it took him bringing someone to be a turncoat to his previous team to now take over another team and make sure everyone knows where  he is and who he is. I’m sorry, no matter how many awards you get, you will never be the greatest and you certainly are no “King”. That title goes to someone who respects the game, respects the fans and respects the players and the people who help keep you in the lifestyle you have made yourself accustomed to being in and James, nor Wade, neither one of you fit those requirements.

I would put someone of Dirk’s or even Tim Duncan’s caliber of respect in that category before I would either one of the Heat duo. The thing about Dirk and Tim is that they have the respect that is required of them to be “the greatest” or one of the greatest in the sport. They do it for their cities, their fans, their teams and their organizations, not the money; that’s what makes them great.

So yes, you might have won the battle, but you won’t win the war!

Where do we go from here? Well, Dallas will come home to face the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans on Saturday night before they head out on the road again to go back to Utah. Let’s hope Dirk is finally going to hit his groove and be back in fine form soon; he definitely is showing signs of it.

And with that, I will bid you a good day and say good luck and let’s go Mavs!
