Michigan basketball (23-5, 10-5) suffered the most embarrassing loss imaginable in Big Ten play by losing 84-78 against Penn State. The Nittany Lions (9-18, 1-14) were 0-14 coming into the game in conference action and hadn’t won a Big Ten game in 18 tries.
That streak ended tonight with a torrid final 10 minutes of play by Patrick Chambers’ team.
How They Lost
In a loss of this magnitude a lot of things have to play out in an unexpected way, and boy did they ever. Despite shooting 51% from the field, Michigan got barnstormed late in the game and literally had no defensive answer for PSU, which is a sad indictment.
At the 10:35 mark of the 2nd half, Michigan took a 15-point lead at 66-51. From there, Penn State caught fire, mainly being carried by Jermaine Marshall, and outscored the Wolverines 33-12 the rest of the way. That is about as shocking of a turn of events scenario as anyone could fathom.
Michigan dropped the ball in several areas that they usually dominate in. They committed a ghastly 21 personal fouls against an athletically inferior team and turned it over 15 times. Combine that with a 5-20 effort from 3-point range and the door was open for Penn State to pull off the unthinkable.
The Lions shot 10-20 from long range, 20-27 from the free throw line, and turned it over just 9 times. Marshall led the way with 25 points and 6 rebounds while drilling a career-high 6 three balls. D.J. Newbill added 17 and Ross Travis was everywhere with 15 points and 12 boards.
After a tremendous defensive game on Sunday against Illinois, Michigan was back to scrambling and leaving the opposition with wide open looks.
The loss rips away any hope Michigan had at a #1 seed in the tourney and all but derails their stated goal of claiming a 2nd straight Big Ten title. To see this go down in Happy Valley caught everyone by surprise.
Michigan’s 3 Stars
- Tim Hardaway, Jr. – TH2 had a strong game with 19 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists while shooting 8-16 from the floor.
- Trey Burke – Burke had 18 points on 5-10 shooting and 7-8 from the free throw line. Uncharacteristically, Burke turned the ball over 6 times. That’s about 2 weeks’ worth of giveaways for the nation’s best point guard. Burke carries the burden of being the guy that makes sure Michigan doesn’t lose these games. Tonight, he couldn’t will them to victory.
- Jordan Morgan – Morgan had his 2nd consecutive strong performance. He was 5-6 from the field on his way to 11 points and 5 boards.
News and Notes
- Despite a nice looking line of 12 points and 8 rebounds, Nik Stauskas turned the ball over 5 times, played what was generally some lousy defense, and got a big ear-full from John Beilein in the game’s final minutes.
- After a great game against Illinois, Caris LeVert was a virtual ghost against PSU. He had 4 fouls and was 0-3 shooting the rock. His solid defense wasn’t there to rescue Michigan on a day where they could have used it.
- Jordan Morgan got the start tonight, ending a string of starts by fellow big men Mitch McGary and Jon Horford in his stead.
- Michigan won the rebounding battle, 37-27.
- Michigan didn’t execute good offense down the stretch, which resembled some of their struggles in end of clock situations throughout the year. They have to find a way to play with poise if they think they can make a run in late March.
Up Next
Speaking of embarrassing losses, Michigan will play host to Michigan State on Sunday. Tip is set for 4 pm eastern and the game will be televised on CBS. This loss certainly takes some momentum out of that matchup as Michigan heads back to the defensive drawing board once again.

Hey ^hdawgr^,
IT MUST ABSOLUTELY SUCK NOT HAVING ****^^^^TWO TRUE COLORS^^^^****!!!! AT LEAST WE HAVE TWO TRUE COLORS (****^^^^MAIZE^^^^**** & BLUE)!!!! YOU CAN SHOW ALL THE COLOR GREEN IN YOUR AVATAR, ALL YOU WANT — THAT STILL DOESNT CHANGE THAT FACT (GREEN IS YOUR ONLY TRUE COLOR; WHITE [LIKE BLACK] LOGISTICALLY AND OTHERWISE IS NOT A TRUE COLOR!!!! OH YEAH, AND FLAMING ON AN ARCHRIVAL’S BOARD, LIKE A PUNK ASS BITCH, IS A REAL NICE TOUCH AS WELL. YOU MUST HAVE LOVED YOUR BRONZE AND GREEN COLOR SCHEME LIKE MICHIGAN STATE WORE IN ITS GAME AGAINST INDIANA @INDIANA!!!! SILLY AND STUPID, SPARTY — DOESN’T EVEN KNOW WHAT ITS OWN COLORS ARE — L.O.L./L.M.A.O./R.O.T.F.L.M.A.O./L.L.O.L/L.O.L.Z./H.A.L.O.L.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’D WORRY MORE ABOUT DISTURBING SITES AND IMAGES LIKE THAT, THEN WHAT ANOTHER SCHOOL DOES OR WEARS, BUT WHATEVER.
–WOLVERINE
all you ladyboyz from ann arbor , those YELLOW socks and YELLOW shoes are real pretty , maybe your wanna be football team could wear those too………
PS: Wolverine, I love your attitude and hope. But be realistic, we are a top 25 team not a top 10 team. We are gonna get destroyed come tourny time. Thank John Beilien and his staff for unpreparing his team and giving us hope…
Ok, once again the defense @ Michigan sucks. I’ve been saying this since day 1. Rich Rod didn’t believe in defense either and where did Beilien come from? How about leadership? Who is the leader of this team. As long as we have this coach and his staff, we will never see Elite 8 or better. Sorry, I love Michigan and I am just being honest. I hate OSU, Wisc and IU but their defense is the real deal. We will lose to Mich St and IU for sure and possiblly Purdue since on the road. Sweet 16 in tourny is a stretch. Have we beat a top 10 team this year? NOPE…..
AS STRANGE AS THIS IS ABOUT TO SOUND,
WE CAN STILL WIN THE BIGTEN TITLE, BUT WIN IT EVEN OUTRIGHT!!!! NO, I HAVEN’T BEEN DRINKING AND NO, I HAVEN’T SMOKED ANY WEED. I ADMIT IT IS GOING TO TAKE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF HELP (i.e. A LOT OF HELP) but there is still a chance. Here is how:
Indiana needs to lose all of its remaining three games (i.e. LOSE OUT!!!!), THEN we need to win all our remaining games (i.e. WIN OUT!!!!), THEN have Michigan State lose 2 of its final three games (it plays Michigan @Michigan, Wisconsin @Home, and Northwestern @Home), THEN have Wisconsin lose 2 of its final three games (it plays Purdue @Home, Michigan State @Away, and Penn State @Away), THEN finally have Ohio State lose one of its two (plays three games, but remember it must beat Indiana) to either Northwestern (@Away) *OR* Illinois (@Home). I haven’t worked out the micro-level details (i.e. specific combination possibilities), but can’t and don’t have time to right now (various things, academically and non-academically speaking) but also because I am not an Accountant (is anyone her one? Does anybody know one? If the answers are yes, then ask him/her what are all of the possibilities here on the micro-level (I’ve worked out the essence or macro-level here). THANKS & PEACE!!!!
VERY SINCERELY & BEST REGARDS,
W-O-L-V-E-R-I-N-E
UPDATE:
FOR THE OHIO STATE PART, IT NOW NEEDS TO LOSE TO ILLINOIS @HOME AND BEAT INDIANA @AWAY (SINCE IT BEAT NORTHWESTERN @AWAY ON THURSDAY NIGHT).
–WOLVERINE
P.S. WE CAN ALSO WIN A SHARE OF THE BIG TEN TITLE (TOO MANY SCENARIOS TO LIST BUT BASICALLY IT BOILS DOWN TO INDIANA GOING 1-2 OR WORSE; MICHIGAN STATE GOING 2-1 OR WORSE; WISCONSIN GOING 2-1 OR WORSE; OHIO STATE 2-0 OR WORSE; AND FINALLY US WINNING OUT BY GOING 3-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
****THANKS & PEACE!!!!^^^^****
–WOLVERINE
Whoa dude…you need to hit the caps button again then go take a poop
I did’t watch the final five minutes for fear I might throw up all over my livingroom. Every opportunity this team has had to be a front runner they’ve choked hard. Chalk it up to being a young team? Nevertheless, they need to start playing with more urgency.
^Cbass^,
agree wholeheartedly with the Urgency-part. I’ll add further that the Coaches/Coaching staff need to coach/motivate/teach with much more urgency as well
–WOLVERINE

The Preemptive RIOT-ACT in regards to Rebounding!!!! Here is the entire Chapter from the Book of Basketball Wisdom (Chapter 9 — Defense and Rebounding):
pg. 95:
The great irony of basketball is this: Offense makes headlines, but defense and rebounding win championships. As Dr.Jack Ramsay correctly observed, “Victory is alwasy within reach of a Strong Defensive Team.” The same could be said for relentless rebounders.
During his heyday, there was no better board man than Moses Malone. In 1983, Malone topped the NBA in rebounding while leading his Philadelphia 76ers to the league Championship. With his tireless work on the offensive boards, he earned Most Valuable Player status. But more importantly, Moses won the hard-earned respect of his peers while proving once and for all that, in basketball, rebounding is the way to the promised land.
pg. 96:
A team’s defense is the foremost part of its overall game plan. Defense, in a word, is dominant.
Jack Ramsay
pg. 97:
Defense is the Foundation and Heart of the Game of Basketball.
Jerry Tarkanian
Defense is just hard work. There will be nights when your shots won’t fall, but you can play defense every night.
Red Auerbach
You don’t have to be “on” to play Defense. We hang our hat on Defense.
Chuck Daly
Defense will save you on the nights when your offense isn’t working.
Adolph Rupp
pg. 98:
Russell’s first law: You must make the other player do what you want him to do.
Bill Russell
pg. 99:
I want us to play mother-in-law Defense: constant nagging and harassment.
Rick Pitino
pg. 100:
I really believe Defense is an Art.
Dennis Johnson
I’d rather block a shot than score.
Bill Russell
The idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot.
Bill Russell
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
YOU’VE GOT TO HATE BEING EMBARRASSED ON DEFENSE.
Isiah Thomas
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
pg. 101:
One way to regain your rhythm on offense is to make some big plays on defense.
Bill Walton
The team with a great defense coupled with a good offense will almost always defeat the team with a good defense and a great offense.
Phog Allen
I stress Offense without the ball and Defense before the other player gets the ball.
John Wooden
Wooden’s Bruins stripped and Dismantled Taller Opponents like a band of LA Car Thieves working over a parked car.
Billy Packer
pg. 102:
All great Teams have two things in common: Defense and Rebounding.
Larry Brown
Rebounding is not about how tall you are or how high you jump, it’s about positioning and quickness.
Bill Walton
There is no glory in rebounding — just victory.
George Raveling
If you can rebound, you can win.
Jerry West
I played against a lot of guys who could jump. But they all came down.
Bob Hansen
pg. 103:
I’ve scored 20,000 points, but the thing I’m most proud of in my career is my rebounding.
Charles Barkley
pg. 104:
Offense sells tickets.
Defense wins games.
Rebounds win championships.
Pat Head Summitt

Michigan, RIGHT NOW, ****^^^^^NEEDS TO SHOW SOME MUTHA’-FUCKING H-E-A-R-T, PRIDE, INTESTINAL-FORTITUDE, DESIRE, MOTIVATION, DISCIPLINE, WILL, FIGHT, LIFE, EMOTION AND MORE IMPORTANTLY . . .
NEEDS TO PUT UP, OR SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^^^^****
–WOLVERINE
I do agree with the “put up or shut up” part
EVERYONE,
didn’t get a chance to watch the game live (i.e. not including the scoreboard following and/or Gametracker). So with that said . . .
****^^^^WHAT THE ~!@@#$@#^%&*(%&*(@#$^@#%!vgfxd#$*$^%!$~%!$%^$%*$&$#$~~~~!$!@#$!!!!!! HELL HAPPENED???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE WERE UP BY DOUBLE-DIGITS AT VARIOUS POINTS IN THE GAME!!!! EVEN IN THE LAST 8 MINUTES OR SO, WE WERE UP BY LIKE 7 OR 8!!!!
DID BEILEIN JUST SIT THERE (AND THINK OH I GOT TO BE CLASSY) AND TAKE IT LIKE A CHUMP AND NOT ~!@@#$@#^%&*(%&*(@#$^@#%!vgfxd#$*$^%!$~%!$%^$%*$&$#$~~~~!$!@#$!!!!!! WORK THE REF.’S (APPARENTLY FROM WHAT I READ ON ESPN CONVERSATION, TREY BURKE WAS GETTING MUGGED AND THERE WERE NO CALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS COMPLETELY, UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE I AM ABOUT TO SAY THIS (THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER SAY THIS) BUT BEILEIN NEEDS TO GET EMOTIONAL AND FIERY AND GO PSYCHO IN TERMS OF TALKING TO HIS PLAYERS LIKE TOM IZZO, BO RYAN, BOB KNIGHT (FORMER COACH)!!!!! THIS NICE GUY, “GENTLE” KIDS GLOVE HAND’S-OFF TREATMENT HAS GOT TO STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^Joe White^,
disagree that we can’t win the BigTen Title still (WE NEED INDIANA NOW TO LOSE TWICE TO US NOW, PLUS MICHIGAN STATE LOSING AT LEAST ONCE, PLUS WISCONSIN AT LEAST LOSING ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
AND ABSOLUTELY, POSITVELY WIN OUT (ANY REMOTE CHANCE OF US NOT THINKING THAT WE HAD TO WIN, DIED JUST NOW == ****^^^^WE HAVE ZERO MARGIN OF ERROR (IN AN ABSOLUTE SENSE) RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^^^^****
I DO AGREE WITH, THOUGH, THAT OUR CHANCES OF A #1 SEED DIED. RIGHT NOW, WE JUST HAVE TO WIN OUT (AND THAT INCLUDES THE B.T.T.) JUST TO MAINTAIN A #2 SEED!!!!!!!
