The pick is in, and the facts are clear: BYU defensive end Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah may be the NFL draft’s best athlete this year.
The 6-foot-5, 270 pound Ansah, who hails from Accra, Ghana, will certainly bring size and athleticism to the Detroit Lions’ front four. What isn’t certain is his experience, football knowledge and even his age.
Ansah had no football experience until being introduced to the game at BYU in 2010, and started just seven games last season. He recorded 4.5 sacks, seeing time at both defensive end and nose tackle.
As for his age, there have been reports that he is as old as 28, but it is generally believed he is 23, and turns 24 in May.
Selecting Ansah with the fifth overall pick can be great for the Detroit Lions, but it can also be a disaster. With his athleticism, Ansah can terrorize quarterbacks in the NFL for a long time. But his inexperience can be his demise.
The Lions coaching staff must take on Ansah as a long-term project. With the right coaching, Ansah can come in and make in impact right away before becoming a serious monster down the road.
Now, it’s up to Jim Schwartz and the coaching staff to realize the potential that Ziggy Ansah posseses.
