Before the dealing began to gain traction, there was the unenviable task for the Philadelphia Phillies of plugging 5 holes around Jimmy Rollins. He, the first member of the core four, needed assistance to mount a last-hurrah charge or two.
This is my 16th poll and I will hone them over time, like my other postings. If you’re interested in checking out something different, my storyline articles–by design–represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Please go to my author archives or the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.
The new summer schedule will allow me to publish the best 2-3 storylines each week, but there will be an updated calendar included with each feature: These posts involve commentary, polls and stats for the upcoming 7 days.
Post time is mostly 5 to 9 pm for the days listed below.
SUDS OR STUDS
The Early Returns:
There are players who went to other organizations, new regulars in the lineup, and 2013 free agents wearing red pinstripes this year.
Originally, there was a financial barrier of $24 million, which was enough for 4 athletes and funds to afford deadline acquisitions this July. Good-byes were in order for Vance Worley, Josh Lindblom and Trevor May, who was at Double-A Reading. Simultaneously, Michael Young and Ben Revere arrived in Clearwater to solidify 2 starting positions. Meanwhile, Mike Adams, Delmon Young and John Lannan signed in Philly to man pivotal positions, while Dom Brown earned the final spot from a grab bag of candidates.
$178 Maximum before the Luxury Tax Threshold:

Despite decent statistics, Adams hasn’t been 100% and that was even before his balky back. Passing the 15-day stage recently, Delmon is just about to reach his comfort level with his feel and timing at the faster speed of a major-league game. Lannan, however, should return in 2 to 4 weeks after only contributing 13 innings during 2 turns of the rotation. On the other hand, Rube Amaro recently opined that Brown is the least of his worries.
Offseason Financial Transactions:

What are we missing? Worley is off to an extremely rocky campaign in Minnesota, while May has improved enough for a 2014 promotion to Triple-A ball. He was 10-13 with a 4.87 ERA for Reading last season. However, Lindblom returns to the majors Monday on the 5-man staff in Texas as an injury replacement, which he worked for.
By the Numbers:

Revere unveils his magic in center field, but from game 1 the opposition has limited his ability to reach first base. Currently he is platooning with John Mayberry Jr. until he ups his batting average. Meanwhile, Michael has lived up to expectations, hitting .300 with a ratio of 21.4% for extra-base blows. Because he was a cornerstone star for the Rangers, his clubhouse value is part of the package.
Remember, there are 118 battles remaining after Sunday.

How do you rate the moves of the general manager?
A Stud = better than expected within his parameters
A Pass = some good and some bad
The Suds = a beer-league performance

Check out my last poll (In the Game) and most recent storyline (Here and There) on the Phillies page or my author archives, where there is an excerpt photo. I will periodically publish the 2013 ERA for the NL East and the MLB 5. Thank you, to all who bookmarked my page.
