Last season the Pittsburgh Steelers played their first season with Todd Haley calling the plays on offense. The offensive problems that the Steelers had last season really disappointed fans. Haley was brought in to help the Steelers get back to their old ways of a run-first offense and since Haley was a key component of the Kansas City Chiefs’ league-leading running attack in 2011, it was believed that he would help the Steelers.
The Steelers’ offense ranked 28th in rushing this past season. Only twice did the Steelers have a one hundred yard rusher and their leading rusher was Jonathan Dwyer who had just 623 yards on the ground. The Steelers’ problems with the running game can be traced to an offensive line that struggled to open up holes for the running backs. Another reason that the Steelers had struggles in the running game could be due to questionable play calling by the offensive coordinator, Haley.
This season the Steelers will be bringing back the whole offensive line as well as their two leading rushers: Dwyer and Isaac Redman. The Steelers also drafted running back Le’Veon Bell from Michigan State, who, with his downhill running style should fit in with their style of play.
The Steelers’ rushing attack should be better this season. The pressure will be on the coaching staff to run the ball more than what they have in the past few seasons, and with the loss of Mike Wallace and the injury to Heath Miller, the Steelers will be forced to run the football more. If they can get a quick start to the running game, expect them to go on a roll that might last the whole season.
The passing game for the Steelers ranked 15th in the NFL due to Ben Roethlisberger who had over 3,000 yards passing despite missing three games with an injury. The passing game was one of the more consistent parts of the Steelers’ game this past season and they had to rely on it at many points with the running game struggling. While the passing game was still good for the Steelers, it could have been better. Haley and Roethlisberger butted heads many times with the way plays were called and that had a clearly negative effect on the offense.
The key for the Steelers passing attack this season is keeping Roethlisberger healthy. When he is healthy he is one of the best in the league and is able to get it to any receiver on any part of the field. With Todd Haley entering his second season hopefully the relationship with his franchise quarterback will be better and if those two can be on the same page the Steelers have the potential to have another good season throwing the football.
Todd Haley entering his second season as the offensive coordinator for the Steelers and the potential is there for the Steelers to have a better season on the offensive side of the ball. If they can limit the turnovers and get the running game going early then look for the offense to have a much better season this year.
