The NHL recently announced the names for the divisions. This comes after a decision earlier this year to realign the divisions in the National Hockey League. The four divisions are now called the Pacific (Western Conference), Central (Western Conference), Metropolitan (Eastern Conference), and Atlantic division (Eastern Conference). The conference realignments come after an attempt to decrease the travelling distances between teams in the same division.
The Dallas Stars are now a part of the Central Division along with Chicago, Colorado, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg.
Possibly the most difficult division team for Dallas will be the Chicago Blackhawks, who have recently won the Stanley Cup in 2010 as well as this past season. The Stars lost all three games to the Blackhawks last season, with one of the losses being 8 goals to 1.
The Avalanche were the worst team in the Western Conference this past season, but were fortunate to receive the first overall pick in the 2013 draft. Dallas won two out of three games against Colorado in the 2012-2013 season.
The Minnesota Wild will be one of Dallas’ most anticipated division rivals. After the last games resulted in several fights and fisticuffs, the fans will look forward to games between the two teams next season if the tensions continue to boil.
Dallas dropped two out of three games last season to the Nashville Predators. With Nashville being the second worst team in the West last season, they will need to turn around and pick up wins against the Predators in order to have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs.
St. Louis Blues
Dallas also lost two out of three games last season against the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis made the playoffs last season with the third most points out of any Western Conference team in the regular season.
The Winnipeg Jets are moving to the Central Division from previously being in the Eastern Conference. Dallas lost to the Winnipeg Jets two seasons ago in their only game of that season. Last season, due to the NHL lockout, they didn’t play each other. The Stars and Jets are essentially playing each other without having experience against one another.
Against their future division opponents, the Dallas Stars were held to merely 5 wins and 10 losses last season. In order to make the impact in the NHL that is highly anticipated among the fans, staff, and players of the Dallas Stars, they will need to be successful in division games this next season.
