Rex Ryan has named Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback for Friday nights preseason game in Detroit. However, Geno Smith will still se some snaps with the first team offense.
Marty Mornhinweg and Rex Ryan agreed that Mark Sanchez deserved the first chance in the preseason to prove he deserves to be the starting quarterback. Sanchez performed well in the scrimmage on Sunday and was excellent in the red zone offense drills on Monday. Geno Smith on the other hand, was nothing but average in the scrimmage and struggled Monday in the red zone situations.
Sanchez has had an impressive camp so far and will now have to embrace the challenge of impressing with the first team before Smith gets his chance. I expect the New York Jets to let Geno Smith fire the ball around the field when he gets his chances with the first team.
Santonio Holmes said he will most likely miss the first four weeks of the season. This is a big blow for a team that already has many question marks at the position. More stress will be put on the Stephen Hill to step up and be a play maker this season.
Vidal Hazelton,a wide receiver competing to make the starting roster, tore his ACL in practice Monday and was cut on Wednesday.
The Jets are very happy with the progress of Quinton Coples transition to outside linebacker. The defense needs Coples to be effective this season when rushing the quarterback. He had 5.5 sacks in his rookie season last year.
Chris Ivory will not play Friday night along with Joe McKnight. Ivory is still suffering from tightness in his hamstring while Joe McKnight has yet to be cleared by doctors do to head pain. Bilal Powell will get another big opportunity to prove he deserves to be the number one back this season.
