Michigan Basketball recruiting target Devin Booker plans official visit

Devin Booker

Michigan Basketball was one of the first teams to begin recruiting Devin Booker. Since that time, everybody has jumped on the Booker express and he has offers from just about every major program in the country. According to a report on scout.com, Booker has decided on four schools that he will take official visits to. They are Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State and Missouri.

A 5-star prospect and the 16th ranked player in the nation, Booker has been to Michigan several times, but the decision to take an official visit bodes well for the Wolverines. They have been in the mix since the beginning and he just so happens to be close friends with 2014 Michigan Football commit Drake Harris. “Michigan’s been recruiting me since the eighth grade, so they have a special place in my heart I’d say because I’ve visited there seven times and my mom lives in Michigan still and she’d probably like me to stay closer to home and play,” Booker told SNY.tv during an interview at the Nike Global Challenge in Washington D.C.

Booker plays for Moss Point High School in Mississippi, but his mom lives in Michigan and his dad, Melvin, played for Missouri which helps explain the schools that he has targeted for official visits.

As a junior, the 6-foot-5, 185 pound Booker averaged 29.7 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per game. He was the Gatorade player of the year in Mississippi. Here is an excerpt of his scouting report on ESPN.

This is not your typical wing guard. Booker has a few things working in his favor. For starters, he’s been blessed with a unique feel for the game and a passion for his position. His basketball IQ is one of the first things you notice regarding his play. He’s economical with his shot selection which speaks to his feel…Booker is an exceptional student with a passion for the game. He’s got big enough shoulders to be the main scoring option for a team and is tracking as a player you construct your backcourt around. There’s plenty he can improve upon but his overall demeanor and skill shooting the ball takes him places. High character prospect.

Booker plans to sign during the early signing period, which begins on Nov. 13.

The only school that he has a date set for is Kentucky, for their Midnight Madness. The other 3 dates are yet to be determined, but those are the schools he said he will be taking official visits to. Obviously, sometime before November 13.

Way too much emphasis has been placed on his friendship with Drake Harris. News flash, Drake isn’t playing basketball in college! If you read what Booker has to say in his blogs and on Twitter he is really excited about teaming up with a great point guard! Yes, he would put more emphasis on attending school with someone he can actually play basketball with, thus, that could be his buddy Tyler Ulis who is destined for MSU or possibly Kentucky (though no offer yet and my money is on Mudiay being the Kentucky focus)! He has more friends than Drake and contrary to UofM fan and journalist opinion, he is far from a slam dunk commit to UofM, no pun intended.

Fair enough Steve. Michigan has a good point guard coming in this year in Derrick Walton and is fast becoming Point Guard U. I don’t think Booker is a lock to choose, Michigan. However, I do believe they are in good shape with him.

Just read this to validate my opinion yesterday. “Asked last month what other players he’d love to team up with in college, Moss Point (Miss.) High School shooting guard Devin Booker put Cliff Alexander, Tyus Jones and Tyler Ulis among those on his list.” Thus, MSU is the frontrunner, with Kentucky close behind! Why? Because Jones is highly likely going to Duke, Kentucky gets Mudiay and doesn’t offer Ulis, so Ulis goes to MSU. Booker really wants to play with a top notch point guard from the 2014 class.
