This week at the Wyndham Championship marks the final week of the PGA Tour golf season before the FedEx Cup playoffs. The tournament will be hosted by Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
This isn’t necessarily a large tournament in regards to the purse and notoriety, but for many of the professionals on the circuit, it’s going to make or break the season. The most intriguing part of this week will be watching the players on the bubble of the top 125 fight for their spot in the playoffs, and the same goes for the players just inside the top 125 because they will still have to retain their spots. Even the players who are already in the top 125 securely are trying to improve their position in order to have the best chance going into the final playoff at East Lake for the Tour Championship and compete for the $10 million prize. Every player from 83rd to 125th on the points list is in the field for this week.
Those of you not familiar with how the FedEx Cup goes (I will go into further detail about it next week before the first playoff), there will be four subsequent events in which the field will be reduced each week until only the top 30 remain in order to play for the cup, and the playoffs begin with a 125-man field.
There may not be a large purse for this event, but there is still 500 FedEx Cup points up for grabs for the winner, but every point counts so the players just outside the top 125 don’t have to win this week in order to advance. Many golfers love to hear stats and how trends run, so here’s a good one for those looking to have a big week at the Wyndham; four of the last six winners of this event have advanced all the way to the final round at the Tour Championship.
