Rex Ryan has named Geno Smith the starting quarterback for the New York Jets third preseason game that goes down on Saturday against the New York Giants.
Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg and the rest of the Jets coaching staff have not been given enough game film on Smith to be able to determine if he should be the starter week one. Smith played very little in the preseason opener because he injured his ankle. That same ankle kept Smith out of the Jets second preseason game.
Naming Smith the starter against the Giants means Smith will play close to two and a half quarters with the starters. Smith has only had two series with the starters this preseason, making this game extremely important for the rookie QB. The coaching staff will be able to get a good look at Smith playing with the Jets starters going up against the Giants starting defense.
Geno Smith must play well Saturday to have any chance at being the starter week one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Smith is impressive it will be very interesting to see who Ryan gives the start to in the final preseason game. The Jets and Giants face off at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Rex Ryan said he expects the New York Jets to be a top five defense this year in the NFL. The Jets have a lot of new young talent on the defensive side of the ball, but lost many veterans. Ryan also expects rookie Dee Milliner to play Saturday even with the sore calf. Milliner struggled against the Jaguars and needs to rebound to win the starting spot over Kyle Wilson.
Antonio Allen, who is battling for the starting safety spot, will get the start in the third preseason game. Allen intercepted three passes on Tuesday in practice and has improved throughout camp. Allen had a fumble recovery last week against the Jaguars, meaning last year’s seventh round draft pick might be in the starting lineup week one. Keep an eye on him, as well as Smith on Saturday night.
