The Pittsburgh Steelers finished out the preseason Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers, losing the game 25-10. The last preseason game is a final audition for players to earn a spot on the roster. One player who stood out all preseason was wide receiver Derek Moye.
Moye played college ball at Penn State and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins in 2012. Moye now finds himself hoping to earn a spot with the Steelers for the upcoming season.
It appears that the Steelers will definitely keep Antonio Brown, Emmauel Sanders, Jerricho Cotchery, and rookie Markus Wheaton. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see the team only keep four receivers on the roster. However, if the team does decide to keep five receivers, Moye is definitely the guy they should keep around.
Moye has been impressive throughout training camp and the preseason. The battle for the fifth receiver spot came down to Moye and the team’s sixth round draft pick, Justin Brown. The role of fifth receiver would have probably went to Plaxico Burress but due to a season ending injury, the spot was wide open. Based on the performances during the preseason it’s evident that Moye has the upper hand on Brown.
Moye stands at 6-foot-5, has solid speed and soft hands. These are all quality traits for a receiver in the NFL to have. Ben Roethlisberger has always been outspoken about much he enjoys a tall receiver. With Burress out for the season, Moye can definitely fill his role as a big target for Big Ben.
Moye, in the final preseason game had two receptions for 55 yards. Moye also showed tremendous hustle as he chased down Carolina’s Josh Norman, preventing him from returning an interception for a touchdown. Don’t think hustle points don’t help your cause in the preseason because they certainly do.
Should Moye make the roster I wouldn’t expect him to make a big impact for the team. He’d be someone who could add a little boost while the tight end position is still in question. He could also be a quality replacement if one of the other four receivers were to go down with an injury.
I believe he’s worth keeping as a fifth receiver but if the Steelers do decided to part ways with Moye, he’d be a solid pick up for another team down the line. Moye has shown signs that he could be a promising receiver in this league.
