In part 1 of my 5 Freezing Questions about the Chicago Bulls, I covered crucial topics, like whether Derrick Rose will wear a knee brace, and how many free Big-Macs Bulls fans will eat next season. In Part 2, I tackle 2 more equally important topics.
4. Will Benny the Bull continue to be one of the top mascots in the NBA, and one of the best in all of sports?
Benny is awesome. Some mascots, like the gorilla for the Phoenix Suns, just don’t make sense. Others, like Brooklyn’s knight thing are just creepy.
Benny, though, is a perfect blend of making sense as a mascot and being nuts. He photo-bombs pregame shows, shoots people with Tshirt cannons, and spills popcorn on opposing fans. YouTube is a goldmine of great Benny moments. Hopefully he can keep it up and continue to be an important member of the Bulls. He’s basically the LeBron of mascots, and should get his deserved recognition.
5. Will Neil Funk and Stacy King continue their reign as possibly the most biased television announcing team in the league?
Neil and Stacy are great, in a way. They always do their best to make sure Bulls fans know, that whatever happened on the court was not the Bulls fault if it was bad, and was quite possibly the greatest play in basketball history if it was good. So, to their credit, Bulls fans are always being encouraged by them! But it’s not actually a very good thing, most of the time. They will give superstars the credit if they play well, but don’t even think about hearing them recognize a role player for having a big game. J.R. Smith is going off for 25 points? What?!! You can’t let him score he’s not even very good!! This is crazy he never usually scores THIS much!
Now don’t get me wrong, Neil and Stacy are great to listen to. Every time King comes up with another ridiculous nickname or phrase (“The Butler did it!” for Jimmy, or “Chicago’s finest brew” for Ronnie Brewer), it’s always comedy gold to listen to Funk’s silence and think of how embarrassed to be on-air with him. And what the two lack in smooth delivery or articulation, they make up for with pure joy and enthusiasm. They’re great fun to listen to, unless you’re a fan of the other team.
