My record- 11-1….Best pick- Northwestern beating Cal 42-35 (NW won 44-30)..Worst pick- Iowa handling Northern Illinois 27-10 when Northern Illinois won the game 30-27. See my week 1 predictions here.
Indiana-73 Indiana State-35….CORRECT….IU QB Tre Roberson only completed three of his six pass attempts. Two of those went for TD’s…IU WR Shane Wynn touched the ball five times for the Hoosiers on Saturday….two fair catches on punts, returned a punt 58 yards for a TD, caught a 43 yard TD pass and caught a three yard TD pass….even if he didn’t play on Saturday, IU still beats the Sycamores by almost 20 points.
Minnesota-51 UNLV-23….CORRECT….This was an ugly first half of football from the Bank until the second half started…then Marcus Jones returned the 2nd half kick 98 yards and got the Gophers the momentum they needed to beat the Running Rebels. That coupled with the Philip Nelson TD pass as the first half wound down was enough to kill any hopes the Reb’s had of making the game interesting.
Michigan State-26 Western Michigan-13….CORRECT….wow was this ugly…MSU QB’s went 17-37 on the night only to be outdone by the Broncos QB’s who went just 18-48 including one of the finer INT’s you will ever see by Spartan Kurtis Drummond…but it was the two defensive scores that got MSU the W….I was hoping to see better offensive execution from MSU, but I think I can assume that I was not alone on that front….it’s only one game Spartan fans…get away from the knife and back away from the ledge…you won.
Ohio State-40 Buffalo-20….CORRECT….It was over early in Columbus…as most people thought it would be…but then, maybe because it was Buffalo but the Bucks lost interest and the Bulls cut a 23 point deficit to 10 in less than 2 minutes and did it again less than five minutes into the third quarter. The point is the Buckeyes won, showed they have some things to work on (discipline for one..nine penalties) and escaped relatively healthy….Next.
Wisconsin-45 Massachusetts-0….CORRECT….didn’t I say that nothing would change much from the Badgers this year?…even with a new coach…yes..yes I did…I even said it would be close at the half…17-0 Badgers….Wisconsin also had three different backs Melvin Gordon (144), James White (143) and Corey Clement (101) each gain over 100 yards rushing…Wisconsin gained 393 yards rushing vs the Minutemen in their season opener and only had to throw the ball 18 times…what a cheese-lovers dream.
Illinois-42 Southern Illinois-34….CORRECT….Whew!…had the Saluki’s scored with less than a minute remaining AND made the two point conversion they would’ve had to go for AND somehow beaten Illinois….I don’t think Tim Beckman would be employed today…but thankfully they didn’t….but was it close. Illini QB Nathan Scheelhaase had a career day…28-36 for 416 and two TD’s…those are the kind of numbers he should have been putting up all last year. He has his work cut out for him next week.
Cincinnati-42 Purdue-7….CORRECT….saw it coming, had no idea Purdue would be so awful…after Boiler QB Rob Henry tied it with about 3 minutes to go in the 1st half, the Beacats scored the next six TD’s….and most of them were due to Purdue turnovers and mistakes…it was a less than impressive showing for new Boiler coach Darrell Hazell. I would not expect the same performance this week from the Gold and Black….not even close.
Michigan-59 Central Michigan-9…..CORRECT….Devin Gardner wasn’t as impressive as most thought he would be, the running game was sufficient and the defense was the best part of the Wolverines on Saturday. After Gardner’s 1st INT inside his own 20, the defense stiffened and gave up only a FG….the Chippewas struggled against a superior foe…it was the first time in quite a few years where UM’s depth was a major advantage as everyone who stepped onto the field was much better than their CMU counterpart.
Penn State-23 Syracuse-17….CORRECT….The Nittany Lions may have a superstar on their hands in freshman QB Christian Hackenberg…he was 22-31 and threw for 278 and 2 TD’s with 2 INT’s….but played pretty well in his first collegiate start. One remarkable thing about this game was there was less than 130 yards gained rushing between the two teams…staggering from a Penn State perspective…bottom line is this: it is going to be fun watching this Hackenberg kid play for the next three or four years.
Northern Illinois-30 Iowa-27…MISS….Well Iowa fans, how do you feel about your program and the direction in which it is headed? The Hawkeyes have lost three of the last four games they have played vs MAC schools….and all of them have been at Kinnick Stadium….that is really all that needs to be said. I doubt there is anything that can be done for the Hawkeyes to justify keeping Mr. Ferentz after this season.
Nebraska-37 Wyoming-34….CORRECT….Nebraska joins Michigan State and Iowa on the “We’ve heard this song and dance before” train…as teams that started the 2013 season just as they finished the 2012 season. In the Corn’s case, there is a lot offense, and virtually no defense…they cannot cover anyone and they cannot generate a pass rush. The Wyoming passing game ignited the Lincoln skies Saturday night for 383 yards and 8.7 yards per pass attempt….and the yards per rush was almost as high at 7.3 after gaining 219 on the ground….Bo Pelini has to be pulling his hair ou……nevermind.
Northwestern-44 California-30….CORRECT….Something to keep an eye on this year in Evanston…before that though…congrats to Northwestern on going to the west coast and actually winning…I heard on BTN before the games started on Saturday, that the last 25 times the Big Ten has played at a PAC 10 or PAC 12 school, the Big Ten has only won five times….so great job Pat Fitzgerald…but back to my point and what to watch for…the injury bug to nestle in and make a home in that purple locker room. QB Kain Colter, HB Venric Mark and CB Daniel Jones all went down and missed a lot of snaps in this one…that is something that didn’t happen to the Cats in 2012.
