On Monday, the San Diego Chargers lost to the Houston Texans. To clarify, the Texans did not win, the Chargers lost. After dominating the first half 28-7, the Chargers seemed to completely collapse and ultimately lost 31-28. The second half was absolutely terrible on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Bolts couldn’t get any drives together and didn’t enter scoring position a single time. Defensively, it seemed like the Texans could throw the ball just about whenever they wanted and Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson was pretty much given an all-access pass on the field.
Despite all this, this game was good for the Chargers. Monday’s season opener showed one thing about this team that should keep Charger fans excited for the upcoming games: the Bolts can play. If we take just the first half of this game and break it down, San Diego looks like a great football team. The Houston Texans are currently ranked 6th in the NFL according to the ESPN power rankings. In the first half, San Diego had their way with them. The Chargers didn’t finish them off, but the fact that they were able to outplay the Texans for half the game is quite impressive. Since the Chargers are ranked 26th overall (24th last week), this is even more surprising.
The first half also showed that San Diego might be getting a Phillip Rivers that partially resembles the classic Rivers that played years ago. It won’t be the complete package, as Rivers was 1-7 and a pick in the fourth quarter, but there something different this year when compared to last. If the Chargers can get elite level play from Rivers this season, then the team may not be in the rebuilding stage after all.
The second half collapse was severely disappointing, but it isn’t a new problem for the team. Last season, the Chargers had a similar collapse against the Denver Broncos where they controlled the first half and then were completely shut down in the second. The fact that this is happening again could mean one of two things. Firstly, that San Diego is the same team as last season and will face many of the same problems. The other scenario is that the Chargers are still developing into a new team under head coach Mike McCoy and just haven’t completely figured it out yet. Due to the high energy in the first half, it seems as if this could be the case and the real Chargers will be ready in a few weeks. Look for each game to be an improvement on the last until a quality football team emerges.
The lost left a bad taste in Bolt fan’s mouths, but at the same time it was a better result then what was predicted. Moving forward the team plays the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The Eagles just upset the Washington Redskins last weekend thanks to the new offense installed by new head coach Chip Kelly. This game will not be an easy one so San Diego will have to come out strong in order not start the season 0-2.
