This offseason the New York Jets quarterback battle ended when Mark Sanchez was injured in the third preseason game against the New York Giants. What everyone is wondering is who would have been named the starter if Sanchez was not injured?
Before Thursday night’s game against the New England Patriots, Mark Sanchez told the media that he won the quarterback battle during the preseason. Sanchez told NFL Network that he was upset about his injury because he won the competition saying “there’s no doubt. It was a done deal.”
Geno Smith this week was asked about the quarterback battle with Mark Sanchez, but didn’t refer to back to Sanchez’s comments. However, Smith did respond to the rumors that the Jets organization was in favor of Matt Simms being the starting quarterback. Smith said he doesn’t think the Jets organization would have drafted him in the second round if they didn’t see potential in him as being a starting quarterback in the NFL.
When Rex Ryan was asked who would the starting quarterback, he said this week Geno Smith will be the starter, but would not commit to Smith next week. Ryan said no spot on the depth chart is guaranteed, and that is team should only be focused on this upcoming week of preparation for the Buffalo Bills.
Geno Smith will get his third start against fellow rookie starter E.J. Manuel. Geno Smith will be playing with a chip on his shoulder Sunday after the Bills passed on him in the first round. Many thought Smith would be the first quarterback taken in April’s draft but Doug Marrone elected to go with E.J. Manuel. Expect Smith to come out with a little extra motivation on Sunday to prove to the Bills organization that they made a mistake.
-Neither Willie Colon or D’Brickashaw Ferguson will be suspended after being ejected from the game Thursday night.
-Dee Milliner will most likely be out of the starting lineup this week. Kyle Wilson will be the starting corner along side Antonio Cromartie.
