As many people wouldn’t have expected, Manchester City annihilated Manchester United earlier today in the first Manchester derby of the season. It may be seen that United’s squad selection was very poor and the loss of van Persie’s influence was a big factor in the team’s loss. However, a team of United’s caliber should have never been allowed any team to put four goals past them. This is where City deserves more credit because they were more deserving in their efforts. They had desire and confidence in their play in front of goal. It absolutely showed in this match as Manchester United were simply outclassed by their rivals and can only wait for another chance later in the year to get back at them.
Manchester City’s play was very intricate and subtle in a sense they countered very well. It seems that Manchester United had no idea how to defend them and it showed today. Manchester United’s defending was poor from every single aspect. They were losing their marks way too easily and showed no passion to win the ball back and get back into the game. Every City goal that was scored was mainly due to United players being lazy to mark on their players. Instead of being proactive, Fellaini had suffered the most in this match as he didn’t offer the strong defensive abilities to this match.
For the first goal, Samir Nasri ran down the line and showed his great trickery to beat Smalling with a ball to Kolarov. Kolarov would then cross it to Aguero who would easily place in the back of the net and give City the advantage over United in the opening 15 minutes. This would of course only be the beginning as City started to control the game in their own way. Just before half-time drew for a close, Nasri would take a corner and place it into the box with Yaya Toure managing to escape from Fellaini and tapped in another goal for the Citizens.
City’s next goal, Nasri played an excellent through ball Alvaro Negredo who ran down the line and cut back to his right foot. He chips it into the box, to the oncoming Aguero who volleys the ball into the back of the net. Aguero loses his marker, Fellaini, and sprints into the box and tucking in an execllent finish. Aguero has been showing excellent form and composure in front of goal. If his influence on the team keeps going, City will surely become the English Champions once again.
The final goal for the Citizens would come from Samir Nasri himself. Nasri was instrumental in helping City break down United with his intricate passing and eye for goal. Jesus Navas would start the build up play by running down the right side of the pitch and deliver a ball that missed all of the United defender’s head. The ball was hit so sweetly by Nasri and it secured Manchester City’s supremacy over United for the time being.
In the final minutes of the match, Wayne Rooney would get his club on the scoreboard with a stunning free-kick that glided around the opposing team’s wall and placed it into the top right corner. Rooney’s form at the moment is a fantastic upside to this match but it proved to be fruitless as City have won yet another Manchester derby by a convincing margin. Manchester City are rediscovering their superior form again under new manager Manuel Pellegrini whom seems to have them ticking once again.
